Boozy Britain!

There are many good places to be within Great Britain, good that is if you are after a boozy night out or a quiet night in. If you are thinking of coming over to Britain on holiday (or vacation), you wouldn't want to come to the wrong place. So here are the best and worst places for the number of pubs, clubs and off licences per person living within that town or city.

Number 1, the booziest place in Britain.

Quite surprisingly to me, this accolade goes to Westminster, in the heart of London. This area has the trendy west end, full of London's theatre land, and now is able to boast of having the most drinking establishments per head in the country. A population of 423 people per drinking establishment living within its boundaries.

2, The runner-up or close second goes to Scarborough, in North Yorkshire. A resort town, so at it's busiest during the summer months. The northern town has 554 people per drinkery.

3, This goes to the city of York, again in the county of North Yorkshire. Many years ago I lived here for a while, it was reported then to have 365 pubs sited within the ancient cities walls, I think that figure has dropped some since then but still has some fine drinking houses.

Other places that rank highly amongst the drinking fraternity are Llanelli, in South Wales, Islington in London (Margaret Thatcher's old constituency), Exeter in Devon, Carlisle close to the English/Scottish border, Darlington in the north east of England, Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and coming in at number ten and close to where I am at present is Boston in Lincolnshire.

Now for the most sober places in the country, these appear to be mostly among the most affluent areas of the country. Bracknell in Berkshire, Middlesboro in the north east of the country. Barnet in London, closely followed by Enfield also in the capital. The only entry in either list from Scotland falls to East Dunbartonshire, close to Glasgow. Next comes Basildon in Essex and then across to Northern Ireland and Lisburn, close to Belfast. The top three soberest places in Britain fall to Hertsmere in Hertfordshire, just to the north of London, with 2,906 people per drinking hole.

Second in the sober list falls to Newham in East London, here you have to push past up to 2,918 others for each pub, club or off licence.

The winner or loser of this prestigious award as the most sober place in Britain falls to Yeovil in Somerset, the west country of England is renowned for its cider, and I am a little surprised that in this market town you have to potentially share the bar with up to 3,163 others. If that is the case I hope they have large bars in that town, with more than one barman on duty.

Another little look at the booziest place, it's also where the countries decision making is done, Westminster is home to the government. Perhaps that accounts for some of the decisions!
