Borat: Highly Offensive to Some, Hilarious to All

Daniel Rein
Borat is one of those films due to cause controversy because of its amount of jokes. Because so many jokes are directed at so many different ethnic and religious groups, someone is bound to be offended. The character of Borat is played by Sasha Cohen who also has his own show called the Ali G show.

Sasha Cohen is Jewish and doesn't waste much time into the film making fun of the way that the world perceives Jewish people with giant noses, slaughtering people, greedy people, etc. Several scenes are hilarious in which he does make fun of this ethnic group which are used to show just how funny the stereo type is. In one scene he goes into a Southern state store and asks the gun dealer which is the best type of gun to kill Jews. The gun dealer doesn't even blink an eye and starts showing him the different types of guns in the store. In another scene, Borat talks about his fear of flying across the country from New York to California because of the Jewish terrorist attack of September 11. Finally, in probably one of the funniest scenes of the film, Borat needs a place to stay for the night so he goes into a house for a bed and breakfast which is owned by orthodox Jews. When Borat goes into his bedroom, he is fearful of the very friendly husband and wife and when they give him a sandwich to eat, he think that they are trying to poison him and he flees out the window.

Many of the scenes from Borat were taped with a secret camera and the people in the film clips did not know they were taping. For example, the gun scene which I just described was not staged at all and very real, showing just how wrong the United States is. In another funny scene, Borat hitch hikes with a pair of fraternity guys in a van and gets drunk with them as the guys talk about having women as slaves and returning to the old days in the South.
Another group that gets made fun of constantly is the gay community as Borat attends a gay pride rally and the jokes just keep on flowing. Above all though, Borat makes fun of his country to such a huge extent that it is downright funny. I had read that a man from Kazakhstan had posted a letter on the web saying that his country really wasn't this bad as the film made it out to be. However, the movie Borat did put Kazakhstan on the map, so to speak as not many people knew where it was prior to the film as Borat points out on a map in the film.

In the final scene of the film which is laugh out loud funny, Borat falls in love with Pamela Anderson and tries to marry her by putting a plastic bag over her head and chases her around the store. You just have to see this film.
