Border Fancy Canaries: Bred for Their Beauty

Elisia Yun
Canaries are known as some of the most popular species of pet birds that pet breeders will want because they are such a delight to have around. Among the canaries, the Border Fancy Canary is actually quite a popular breed of canary particularly because of their beautiful appearance which attracts many breeders. Along with their beautiful appearance, they also have a gentle and lively nature making them quite the pet to have. This breed of canary came from Scotland. It became a common canary the late 1700s.

Border Fancy Canaries are actually quite common, and they are commonly bred as well; this is because they are bred for their type meaning their appearance. There are three different categories of canaries which are color-bred, song, and type. The Border Fancy Canary doesn't fit into the song category very well because while they sing, their song is not especially soothing - many would describe it as choppy. Because Border Fancy Canaries are generally bred for their type, this means that they are popular at shows.

The judging for the Border Fancy Canary is rather tough, and they are scored out of 100. For example, red is not an accepted color in show rings. Their coat should exhibit rich colors with an even tint throughout the plumage. While red is not accepted, a wide variety of colors for the plumage of the canary is looked for. Yellow, variegated green, white, blue and cinnamon, buff and ticked are also popular colors. Among the colors, yellow is perhaps the most popular color among the breeders. The Border Fancy Canary is larger than the average canary; however, their size must not exceed five and a half inches at adulthood. They have round bodies and heads which gives them an adorable appearance, and are bred specifically just for that.

There are many websites and organizations out there to protect these canaries and help judge them for their appearance. For example, there is a British Border Fancy Canary Club with the objective of promoting and supporting these canaries in their natural colors. This site can be viewed at http://www.bbfcc.co.uk/home.htm for all the canary lovers out there or even for anyone with an interest in these canaries. On top of that, there are many resources particularly books out there on how to manage, breed, and care for your canary. You should stop by your local library to check out whether they have any books available.
