Boris Johnson Verses the Bendy Bus

Should the Routemaster Come Back?

As I am sure many Londoners know, our new mayor Boris Johnson has vowed to rid the capital of Ken Livingston's introduction of the bendy bus, and replace them with a new route master.

I am sorry, but it just does not work! Whilst being in touch with our heritage, the route master was built for a time where there were few wheelchair users or mothers with pushchairs (or strollers as you yanks call them). I have seen the designs for the new route master, and though sleek and styling, it is somewhat hideous, if only I had a picture to show you.

Yes, the bendy bus is fraught with problems! They have broken down, taken up too much space and caught fire! But, Transport for London has just spent 2 years training half the needed drivers for these buses at an immense cost to the taxpayer, and now all that work is to be abandoned. I feel as though this plan should have been seen through to the end; at least we should have a trustworthy transport system (over ground that is). And you know what the strange thing is? I still haven't ridden a bendy bus, despite these things being here for the last four years! But, maybe I have - in Paris! Yes, the French seem to enjoy the bendy bus. And I am fascinated by the size and scale of these things; to be able to bend in the middle and still be standing or sitting in place without an issue.

But now, as Johnson tries to bump off these huge things, it seems he is going to have a problem, having tarnished the bendy's image. The plan is to replace all of London's 350 bendy buses, operating on eleven routes, over four years as their contracts expire. But, Glenn Salmon of leasing firm Lombard; speaking to the Evening Standard in May said, "They've got a bad reputation because of various pres reports, but there is nothing wrong with the buses, they do an excellent job."
Mr Salmon also hoped to get between £70000 and £80000 for each of the seven years appliances. But I think Mr Johnson's hopes of ""pensioning the buses off to a Scandinavian airport" may very well be dashed.

So, as Bendy supporters argue that replacing these things will cost TFL money it doesn't have; I am saving all my money for an least one segment of British heritage. Think of all the parties and sleep-ins you could have in these rolling boxes; a perfect home from home! I cant wait to see one in Watford!
