Borrowing Books from a Library Vs. Purchasing Books from a Bookstore

Many people love to read. Reading can be a wonderful leisurely activity. What's better than sipping a warm cup of tea or coffee by the fire with a book in hand on a rainy day? There are two ways you can get books to read. One is by borrowing books from a library. The other is by purchasing the books yourself from a bookstore. What's better? To borrow them or own them? There are pros and cons to both.

The obvious pro to borrowing a book from the library is that you don't have to pay for the book. You get to read it at no cost to you. However, you are limited to how long you can keep the book and are penalized if you return the book late. If you check a book out for two weeks and return it overdue, past its due date, then you usually have to pay a small fine or late fee. Plus, let's say that you want a particular book right away. Sometimes you have to wait to get it because it's checked out by another patron. This often happens with very popular books, especially new releases. Depending upon the size of your town or city and the popularity of the library, this can be an extensive wait period. Plus, you have to make trips back and forth to the library to pick up and return the book.

On the other hand, if you purchase the book yourself, you have to pay the upfront cost for the book. That is the obvious negative to purchasing a book. Some of them can be quite expensive, especially if you purchase a hardback copy. However, you will never have to pay a late fee on the book. Nobody can tell you how long you may keep the book. It's yours. You'll have it forever, and you can use it any time you want. You don't have to go anywhere to get it or wait in a queue for it. It's yours to do with whatever you wish. Plus, you have your own brand new, fresh copy. It won't be damaged or used as are some books from a public library.

A lot of people would rather have their own copy of books, especially if they are collectors or fans of a particular author. Some people only purchase certain books and go to the library for others. Others prefer to use the library for all their reading material. Whichever method of reading books works best for you all depends upon your personal preferences and whether you enjoy a book so much that you would like to own it yourself or not. There are pros and cons to consider with both.
