The Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion is a great pedal from boss to help you with the distortion sound most rock and heavy metal guitarists are looking for. This pedal has been produced by boss for several years and remains one of their more popular distortion effects. There are a variety of sounds you are able to achieve with it to dial in the tone you are looking for. It also can help replace extra equipment that you would purchase if you did not have it.

This thing is built like a tank with a medal casing. There are four knobs that control your sound. The level knob controls the volume of the pedal. The tone knob lets you dial in a more treble or bass sound. The drive knob will control how much overdrive or distortion there is when you use the pedal. The last knob is what makes the pedal unique. It is a color knob. This allows you to dial in the sound from all overdrive or distortion. You can also use a mix of either. A good way to think of this pedal is having an Ibanez Tube Screamer overdrive pedal and a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal. You can find this pedal new for about $90 or used for about $40. I bought a used pedal and it has never let me down.

There are a few ways that someone is able to use the Boss OS-2. What I like to do is run it in front of one of my already overdriven amplifiers. Here is how I like to use this. I usually use my Marshall Head and set the overdrive on the amp at 90-100%. I set my OS-2 up for more of a boost effect to compliment that Marshall Amplifier head. I put the OS-2 level at 50%, the tone usually at 40-50%, my drive knob is at 50% and my color button is also at 40-45%. This gives me a really nice boost and does not muddy the sound very much. Kiss and Metallica have used this pedal this way on some of their material.

There really are not any major drawbacks to the OS-2. The only thing I will say is that if you have not desire to blend the color or use this only as a distortion unit then it would not be great for it. I would recommend the Boss DS-1 instead. If you were going to use it just for an overdrive it really is a good deal. They are cheaper than the Ibanez Tube Screamer and sound just as good in my opinion.
