Rent a Bike in Boston

Matt A. Maxx
Boston bicycle rentals are not all about vacation or weekend fun any more. Today, with our gasoline prices skyrocketing, many people are beginning to eye bicycles as an alternative form of daily travel. Boston is a flat terrain area and the perfect place for exploring the world, or getting to work via a Boston bicycle rentals establishment.

Going out to rent a bicycle in Boston is a very easy thing to do. Many bicycle rental places are available for every kind of need: vacation, weekend fun, college student transportation, or long term organization rentals. One place will even pay you to put advertising onto the side of your own bike as you ride. (See end of article for details.)

Below is a sampling of some of the Boston bicycle rentals establishments and services available for all of your cycling needs.

Rent A Bike In Boston:

Boston Bicycle Rentals and Cambridge Bicycle Rentals will supply you a rented bicycle for just 25.00 a day, or a flat fee of 125.00 for a full 7-day week. When you rent a bicycle in Boston from either of these establishments, it will come with a helmet, lock, and water bottle holder, you must supply your own water bottle.

Boston Bicycle Rentals carries Jamis and Fuji bicycles; Cambridge Bicycle Rentals carries Alpha brand bikes for your enjoyment. These two stores are located less than 2-miles apart so that it is possible for one group to get brand choices from both stores if this is what you prefer to do.

Payment can be made with all major credit cards, debit cards or with cash. A photo ID is necessary, children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and credit card or debit card information must be supplied as security despite payment choice. Tours are available from both stores for an additional 25.00.

Back Bay Bicycles has Boston bicycle rentals available in two locations. City style bicycles are available for 25.00 per day, or 125.00 for a 5-day week. Road bikes are available for 35.00 per day, or 175.00 for a 5-day week. Mountain bikes and tandem bicycles are also available for an extra charge.

City bicycles are Cannondale Daytripper's that come with helmet, lock, water bottle holder and rear racks. Road bikes include 700c wheels with STI shifting and you may bring your own pedals and specialty shoes if you'd like.

Back Bay Bicycles offers tours, both group and private, priced between 49.99 and 2000.00 per person. A few samples of tour choices include: Harvard Square Tour, Saturday Morning Road Rally, Freedom Trail Comprehensive Tour, and more.

The Back Bay Bicycle main store can be reached at: Phone: 617-247-2336. This Boston bicycle rentals establishment is located at 366 Commonwealth Street in Boston. Click Hereto visit the Back Bay Bicycle internet site.

MyBikeOnline.com is a different kind of Boston bicycle rentals program than the previous listings. This innovative bicycle outlet has programs available for businesses, college students, or other groups to rent bicycles for their members to use on a longer term basis than those want if they are just vacationing in the Boston area.

MyBikeOnline.com will also pay people riding a bike if they will attach advertising to the frame of their bicycle as they are riding it. I get the impression from their Web site that this might apply to people outside of the Boston area too. If you participate in this program you get a 75.00 check every three months. I have read the reviews for MyBikeOnline.com online and everybody that has found this place seems to be happy.

If you would like to read more about these interesting programs, Click Here to see the MyBikeOnline.com Web site. Or, they would like you to leave a detailed phone message with contact information at: 617-232-2181.

Having grown up in Boston (Dorchester) the idea of being on a bicycle there frightens me - The reputation Boston has for 'bad' drivers - everyone driving as though they were a taxe driver- is, in my experience, earned! I think I'd feel unsafe - especially anywhere near one of those nefarious rotaries!

I like the photo. Was it there before? If so, I must have missed it.

I agree. For those who can bicycle, rentals can be a super way to get around Boston. The city is actively promoting bicycle paths and parking a car can be a major pain. Bicycles are so much easier plus you have the overnight option and discounts if you keep them for more than one day. Compare gas costs to pedal power and I think bikes come out ahead for health benefits and cost in many cases. They are certainly convenient. Of course, one has to watch for motorists and use common sense - but that is a given. Super article!
