Skateboard Parks in Boston and the Surrounding Areas

In the 1990's skateboard enthusiasts were banned from parking lots and shopping centers. Young skaters built small ramps in their family's yard or on the corner streets. BMX bikes could be seen flying from ash dumps and tricking on vacant lots; skate parks were rare. However, in response to an uprising of million-dollar extreme sportsman's and the X-Games, skating and BMX as a sport was accepted. Skateboarding parks were built through-out the United States. Boston Massachusetts and surrounding areas continues to build top quality skateboarding parks. Many are free, offer lessons, clinics, and cater to party needs. Some of the top U.S. skate parks find their home in Boston and top rated skaters are tricking with the boys down the street.

Haborside Community Center Skate Park offers a free skate park for the community and welcomes those from outside the cities limits. The skateboarding park is made of cement, located outdoors, and is considered great for practice and beginners. From years of use and no updates, the park does not have the same difficulty level as others and does not offer the new skate park enhancements found in other Massachusetts skate parks. Reservation Skate Park is another free skate park in Boston. No pads or helmets are required. The park is located outdoors is has ample lighting for nighttime skateboarding enthusiasts. The ground is a mixture and in June added three new features on the lower levels. Evan, from Boston ,enjoys the new features of this public skate park and claims they; "...create more flowy lines. It's an awesome park!" The Skateboarding park is located at 1 Reservation Road, Hyde Park, MA 02136. Newburyport Skate Park is one of the greatest skate parks in Massachusetts. One of the top rated skate park innovators, Airspeed Parks created this Boston area skateboarding park. The park is trolled concrete, outdoors, free to the public, and was built with fast polls that have smooth lines. The park is primarily constructed of bowls. The skate park has a 3ft rail (25 ft long) and one flat bar. The parks primary attraction is for skaters whose appetite is for airs and carves. During many week days pro-skateboarders from the Boston area can be seen practicing their winning rides. The park is free, helmets are necessary. The summer hours are 9a.m. till 8pm or until sunset. Skaters Edge Skate Parkis located forty minutes from Boston. The park is located indoors for year round convenience. The park is open till midnight on weekends, allowing people of all ages an opportunity to enjoy the edgy atmosphere. The riding surface consists of wood and pads are required. Skater Edge Skate Park has an on site Pro shop. The shop carries a full range of skating and BMX riding gear for skaters' of all ages and ability levels. Lessons and skate clinics are available at this Boston indoor skateboarding park. Parties are also available. Party prices include all day passes, free T-shirts, free decorations and more. Hours of operations vary throughout the year, but are basically open M-Saturday with three shifts of operations. The fees are $10-$15 per session. Sessions are typically 2-3 hours. All day passes are $35 and 6 month and yearly passes are also available. Contact information is available at the Boston area skate boarding parks website.

The Charles River Skate Park is being built in Boston to serve the cities unique skateboarders and BMX riders. Currently under construction, the park is taking donations online and in the community. The park will be located in Cambridge and is being built by Grindstone, considered one of the best skate park builders in the world. The park is being built with access from four T stops, allowing easier access to the youth of Cambridge and Boston. The skateboarding park will be uniquely built along the river and under an overpass, giving shelter from weather conditions. Grindstone is comprised of skateboarders who plan to build the park with their own needs in mind. The park is slated to provide course difficulty for every stage of skateboarder. Fees have not been set and the park hopes to open by spring of 2009. The park is expected to primarily mimic Grindstones Texas skate park, viewable here.
