Boston Red Sox Broadcaster Jerry Remy to Return to Booth Soon
Recovery from Cancer Treatments-Rem Dawg Ready to Return
Jerry Remy has been covering Red Sox games with his sidekick announcer Don Orsillo, since 2001. For Red Sox Nation, this dynamic duo is often the game itself. Though many have filled in for the ailing Remy (some say 60 or more) including Dennis Eckersley, the 2009 baseball season has not been the same without the game analysis, play-by-play calls and playful antics of these two as a team.
News that Jerry Remy stopped by Fenway Park to meet with Red Sox Manager, Terry Francona, spread like wildfire throughout Massachusetts today. It was big news and it was positive news to hear, after a quick departure from the booth in May, Rem Dawg, is well on the road to recovery and anxious to get back to baseball.
President of Red Sox Nation, Jerry Remy returned for the 2009 baseball season in March, but unfortunately, in May, experienced an infection, which carried into pneumonia, forcing him to take the leave of absence to continue his recovery from cancer and the treatment that followed.
Jerry Remy has remained open and honest about his hazardous smoking habit and warned Red Sox Nation fans, especially children, about the perils of smoking. He hopes his honesty about smoking and its grave effects will serve as a precaution against the negative habit of cigarettes.
As a broadcaster, Jerry Remy holds an iconic status for many, but in New England, he is more than just a baseball announcer. Massachusetts born and bred, Remy still resides here. He played second base in a Red Sox uniform from 1978 to 1985. Due to a knee injury, retirement for Remy came in 1986.
He also owns a hot dog stand called "RemDawgs," outside of Fenway Park on the infamous Yawkey Way and the Jerry Remy's Sport's Bar and Grill at Logan Airport in East Boston. The restaurant is located in the pre-security Terminal C at Logan.
It will be wonderful to have Jerry Remy back in the Red Sox booth and it will be wonderful to have him and Don Orsillo together, announcing game plays and making the Red Sox fans laugh. The season is not too far from being over. No matter how little time there to this baseball season, though, it will be a lot better with Jerry Remy in place again.
