Boston Soul Food Restaurants

JT
Boston is not known for its soul food, but that doesn't mean you can't get some delicious barbecue and fried chicken within city limits! Check out these restaurants for some fine southern dining!

Dick's Last Resort (Quincy Market At Faneuil Hall Marketplace): A favorite of both bachelorette parties and tourists, Dick's has a reputation for having snarky servers with an attitude. Even if you don't appreciate the smart alecks who serve you, you should enjoy the slightly pricey chicken fingers, pork ribs, and crab legs. All restaurant patrons are supposed to get a free hat, if free hats are your thing.

Redbones Barbeque (55 Chester St, Somerville): Visitors can enjoy the Southern atmosphere while they dine on pork, brisket, chicken, and hush puppies. The drawback is the long wait during dinner hours. Check Redbones out during the afternoon and chow down for less with the all-you-can-eat option that lasts until 4 PM.

Soul Fire (182 Harvard Ave, Allston): A reasonable BBQ and soul food destination located in the Allston area. Meat lovers have plenty of choices: ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and fried chicken are only some of the available options. The barbeque is served dry so patrons try all of the different sauces available. Vegetarians will be a little less satisfied; Soul Fire has fewer options (mainly side dishes). The fried Mac & Cheese is a very popular choice

Chef Lee's II Soul Food (554 Columbia Road, Dorchester): You can get all of the traditional soul food options including pig's feet, fried chicken, ribs, and mac and cheese. The veggies aren't as delicious, but you get the most bang for your buck! The walls are lined with photos of prominent African Americans and Chef Lee's family.

Poppa B's Restaurant (1100 Blue Hill Ave, Dorchester): A super cheap option for soul food lovers, Poppa B's offers delicious fried meat smothered in gravy. The chicken breast and waffles are not as good as the more traditional soul food fair. Lastly, the service does not have the best reputation.

Horseshoe Grill (226 Main Street, North Reading): Slow-smoked southern barbeque, seafood, and other options are available at this restaurant. Kids have their own menu options. Entrees range from $10 to $25 and the portions are large so you have a chance to get leftovers! Horseshoe has recently renovated the dining area to make it more pleasant experience for its patrons.

Tex's BBQ Express (888 South St, Catering Only): You have tempting all-you-can-eat options including hot dogs, ribs, hamburgers, and other tasty options. One reviewer claimed that he went to a few parties just because they served Tex's BBQ express. They cook the food off site and warm it at your party. It's inexpensive but vegetarian options are limited.
