Boston Sports Trifecta: 3 Wins in 1 Night

With the success of the Patriots, the Celtics, and the Red Sox over the course of the decade, Boston sports fans have had a lot to be excited about. Add the Bruins recent surge to the top of the Eastern Conference, and Boston fans have become more than spoiled.

Still, winning a game in 3 major sports, two of them playoff games, is a lot to be excited about.

The first victory of the night came in a 4-0 win for the top-seeded Bruins, whose win last night leaves them down 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite trailing the series, the way in which the Bruins set the tempo with heavy hits and an efficient transition game gives the team and its fans hope for an epic turn-around.

Then came the most dramatic win of the night - the Celtics 95-94 win against the Magic, in which the final points were scored as time expired by Boston's sophomore PF Glen "Big Baby" Davis, who drained two clutch jump shots in the final 32.5 seconds: the first, a jump shot from the top of the key, and the second a 21-foot jump shot from just beyond the Magic logo. That shot, combined with the way Davis played throughout the game, established that he is no longer someone who can be ignored defensively by the Magic. The win knotted up the series at 2 games apiece, and the best-of-seven has become a best-of-three, in which Boston has home court advantage.

Finally, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on the strength of a Jason Bay double in the 8th inning. Closing P Jonathan Papelbon got himself into a first-and-third jam in the 9th inning, but closed out the game and picked up the save by consecutively striking out Carlos Pena, BJ Upton, and Carl Crawford. The Boston Red Sox won the series 2-1, and this marks the first series victory over the Rays in the past six series against them.

With two clutch playoff performances and a huge victory against the Rays, Boston sports fans had a lot more than usual to cheer about on Sunday night, and can look forward to more as the Celtics come home to host the Magic on Tuesday and the Bruins head to Carolina for game 6 of their playoff series on Tuesday as well.
