Boston Street Food: Up and Coming

William Browning
Street food vendors haven't quite caught on in Boston as they have in their northeastern contemporaries New York and Philadelphia but many entrepreneurs are attempting to change that image. While not wholly a street food city like NYC, Boston prides itself on quality food with some vegan and vegetarian carts new this year.

Perhaps the most well-liked street food vendor is Speed's Hot Dog Wagon over on 42 Newmarket Square. Weather permitting he opens for the winter but his normal hours run from 9:30 until 4 in March and until 5 from April until September. If you are a hot dog lover, or a food lover for that matter, you need to try the Wall Street Journal's choice for the best hot dog from a cart. Huge all-beef dogs are enveloped in relish and onions after being cooked in homemade sauce. Buns are toasted too for a warm and flavorful meal all around. If you're in the area and you've got a moment for lunch and it's warm outside you should definitely pop in on weekdays and see what the fuss is about.

Karo's BBQ is in downtown Boston and is a simple silver cart. It's what comes out of the cart that is tasty. Simple chicken breast kabobs served with pita and a special sauce complete the meal that is simple, freshly made, and delicious. Across from the Old Courthouse, this little cart looks out of place amongst the tall building of modern Boston but it fits in well in the gastronomy of quick lunches. If you want more than just chicken you can order a salad or some rice as well. The most expensive dish is $6.50 and lunch is served from 11:30 until 2.

M & M Ribs, or otherwise known as Big Moe's is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday on Hampden Street. Just simple barbecue is served but you get a plate full of ribs for not a lot of money. Great food to fill you up on the go at any time of time this is Boston food for a bargain.

Boston's good carts are improving every day and choices are improving. Try walking down a street and follow the lines for some of the best places to eat with a range of tastes and cuisines. Boston will make a gourmet out of food carts someday they just have to see the fruits of the labors for the ones they have first.
