Boston's Most Expensive Coffee Shops

Go for the "Cup O' Joe"

Renee Morway
Be it morning, afternoon, or evening, a "Cup o' Joe" keeps people on the go. However, it is not all about the coffee. In the most expensive coffee shops in Boston, pastry ranks high as well. Many offer light meals such as sandwiches, too.

What is or is not expensive is subjective. However, you may want to bring your credit card to the following places as the majority of people would consider them some of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston.

Café L'Aroma, 85 Newbury St, Boston, MA (617) 412 4001

A little bit of Europe right on Newbury Street in Boston, at Café L'Aroma you can get authentic Italian (triple) espresso for $2.50 and a Latte for $5.15. However, it is not these prices that make Café L'Aroma one of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston. It is its panini, insalata, and dolce. A delicious variety of sandwiches including a meatless "vegetariano," scrumptious croissants and quiches, and decadent tiramisu and cannoli are what will tempt you to wrack-up the bill.

Flat Black Coffee Company, 50 Broad Street, Boston, MA (617) 298-1800

Flat Black's is a "purveyor" of fine coffees that also sells it, along with pastries. The drinks may be a little more expensive than other area coffee shops but the flavor is in them. One drawback to Flat Back's is that though it may be one of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston, it is not one of the most accessible. Flat Black's closes at 5:00 p.m. daily.

Caffé dello Sport, 308 Hanover St., Boston, MA, (617) 523-5063

One might think that live sports on two wide-screen televisions would make Caffe (yes, two f's) dello Sport one of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston. It even holds contests that offer contemporary first place prizes such as an Apple iPhone. However, Caffe dello Sport also has an extensive menu. It has an Italian atmosphere all the way from its gelato to authentic espresso. Now, one of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston hits the road for it offers espresso catering.

Darwin's Ltd, 148 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MA (617) 354-5233

Many people refer to Darwin's Ltd as a coffee shop. They compare its prices to other area coffee shops and deem them high. Thus, its place on the list of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston. However, this may not be an accurate assessment of Darwin's as it is more of a sandwich boutique than a coffee shop. It serves a unique menu of healthy sandwiches with an equally healthy choice of breads such as 7-grain, whole wheat, rye and pumpernickel. Its sandwich entitled, "The A.R.C.," made of hot roast beef, cheddar, barbecue sauce, tomato and lettuce goes for $7.60 which I think is reasonable. However, "The Acacia," a tuna salad sandwich goes for $7.35 which is high. Its breakfast menu is high as well making it one of the most expensive coffee shops in Boston, if it is indeed a coffee shop. However, Darwin's has a bohemian atmosphere and neighborhood appeal as it names its specialty sandwiches after streets in the "hood" and when it comes to expense atmosphere always matters

Now that you are a little bit more in the know about the most expensive coffee shops in Boston, you may just want to head out to grab a "Cup o' Joe."

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile

  • Boston's coffee shops have it all.
  • Decadent desserts, sports, specialty sandwiches, and fine coffees with flavor.
  • However, you get what you pay for.
