Boston's Top Singles' Clubs

Know Where to Go

Renee Morway
The key word in the title of this article is "top." The most important thing to remember when deciding upon a singles' club is this old saying of unknown origin:

You go to bed with the dog you wake up with the fleas."

Boston's top singles' clubs are high-end establishments with safe, comfortable atmospheres and price levels that keep out that guy; you know the one, who stands on the manhole cover holding up a crooked wire clothes hanger trying to contact the talking moles on Uranus.

A top quality club is where you want to be to meet top quality people in Boston, not Butch's meat market.

Speaking of Butch, when choosing one of Boston's top singles' clubs, remember:

"You do not buy bananas in a bookstore."

There are basically only two main types of singles' clubs: 1. heterosexual; and 2. gay and lesbian. Anyone can have a fun time with friends in either, but when seeking a connection for a night or forever, it is important to be in the right top spot.

The following list will give you a peek into a few of Boston's top singles' clubs.

HarvardGardens - 316 Cambridge Street, Boston, Ma 02114, 617-523-2727

If you appreciate traditional elegance, then this is the garden in which to relax. Established in 1930, Harvard Gardens has 75 years worth of full bloom into one of Boston's top singles' clubs. The crowd is 20's to 30's, the dress is casual to dressy, the candlelit dining area is romantic, and the full bar is full of interesting people to meet. Harvard Gardens offers a variety of thirst-quenchers from fine beers to Urban Bourbon martinis. Zagat's says it has a "fun drink menu" and Citysearch raves that it has "an extensive, inventive drink menu." Harvard Gardens' food menu is delectable as well with something to whet every appetite. How about a scrumptious brunch topped off with a Pear Bellini, or Yellow Fin Tuna Tartar accompanied by Truffle Parmesan Fries for dinner? "This is going to cost me," you say. Au contraire! Harvard Gardens has some of the most reasonable prices I have seen for such fine fare. As far as whetting the rest of your appetite, I hear tell Harvard Gardens is not only one of Boston's top singles' clubs, it is the one in which to meet a dashing doctor. The "Gardens" was Citysearch's 2007 editorial winner in both the "bartenders" and "singles scene" categories. Thursdays are its hottest nights, so mark your calendar.

An Tain - 31 India Street, Boston, Ma (617) 426-1870

If you like to dance the night away, then An Tain should be on your list of Boston's top singles' clubs. It is an after-work bar and dining room during the week offering such innovative drinks as the "Green Cape Codder" (Smirnoff Sour Apple Twist and cranberry juice) and the "One Legged Duck" (Bacardi Limon, cranberry juice, and soda water), according to Boston Nightclub News. However, Thursday and Friday are DJ nights, and its dancing heart beats to contemporary music including hip-hop. The house gets loud and a good time is had by all according to Citysearch customer reviews. It was also voted their Best Irish Pub of 2007. With its little bit 'o the Irish you can certainly count on An Tain to be one of Boston's top singles' clubs with the best brew-skis.

West Side Lounge - 1680 Massachusetts AveCambridge, MA, (617) 441-5566

West Side Lounge earns its place as one of Boston's top singles' clubs with Zagat's review stating that it is "the perfect neighborhood sleeper." This gay nightclub is stylish and draws an academic and professional clientele. With a delicious, reasonably priced food menu and an assortment of drinks that make the mouth water, West Side Lounge fits its top billing. It has rave reviews from Boston Magazine, Travel and Leisure Magazine, and Zagat's. Of all of its reviews, its Citysearch customer opinions are testimony that it is one of Boston's top singles' clubs. West Side Lounge loves private parties, too. So, grab a couple of your friends and have them grab a couple of theirs and head over to this neighborhood gem for a great party. If you go over 25 people, make arrangements to reserve the whole place for lunch, cocktails, or dinner.

209 - 209 Columbus Ave., Boston, MA (617) 536-0972

Simply known as 209, at this Boston top singles' club the numbers add up. In business for 25 years, since 1983, 209 is a "Best of Boston 5 Time Winner". It is also Citysearch's "Best Gay and Lesbian Bar 2007." Noted for specialties such as designer martinis (white grape, vanilla-espresso), 209 is also noted for being one of Boston's top gay and lesbian pick-up scenes. It is also one of Boston's top singles' clubs to offer a unique special: Get a burger, sandwich, or select entrée for only $2.09 with any entrée order every night before 7:30 pm. In addition, enjoy complimentary internet access.

So, now that you know a little more about Boston's top singles' clubs, why are you still sitting at your computer? Go out and have some fun!
