The botulism toxin, when injected into the skin, momentarily causes the muscles of the face to lose mobility. This temporary paralysis makes it impossible for the muscles of the face to contract. Crow's feet, a condition that many an elderly suffer from around the areas of the eyes and mouth, can be effortlessly fixed with an application of the botulism toxin.
As with all the good things in life, everything comes with a catch. In this case, the catch is that you are introducing a potentially noxious toxin into your skin. However, since the effects of the toxin are local to the application, there is virtually no chance for someone to develop an infection from the bacteria.
Once injected, the effects the application lasts anywhere between four to six months. Therefore you don't have to deal with the hassle of going in for regular treatments. In addition, the cost of a botox cosmetic application is relatively less when compared to plastic surgery and facelift, which are bound to be very hard on your bank account.
Just as it is with the case of other treatments on the market, botox surgery comes with a few side effects. The most notable of these is minor swelling and redness at the site of application. But the fact of the matter is that there is bound to be swelling and redness from any injection that we are given. The redness and swelling usually subsides with in a week of the treatment. Also, some people develop a headache after the surgery, which also typically subsides with in a matter of days.
The worst side effect that one can be afflicted with after a botox surgery is when one eyebrow drops lower than the other. This effect is untoward and the exact negation of the final intention of the surgery. However, the side effect usually subsides within a matter of weeks after the surgery. No other harm is done, apart from the fact that you might have to go through social isolation for a couple of weeks, till the side effects subside and everything is back to normal.
Botox is a cosmetic procedure that is taking the world by a storm. Scientists are continuously coming up with new uses of the botulism toxin. Only time can tell what other cosmetic conditions botox can fix.
