Bottom's Up (2006): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Bottom's Up is a romantic comedy starring Jason Mewes as Owen Peadman, a bartender from Minnesota who travels to Hollywood to try to win a bartending contest. Owen gets a quick lesson on Hollywood values that lead him on a quest to find some dirt on actor Hayden Field played by Brian Hallisey. Owen finds himself falling for Hayden's girlfriend Lisa Mancini played by Paris Hilton. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

Bottom's Up is a pretty good movie. Jason Mewes is excellent as Owen Peadman but the plot itself is a little tired. Owen tries to win money to save his father's restaurant and finds love along the way. Not very original or engaging but the actors save the storyline. David Keith is hilarious as the gay uncle who tries to cover up his sexual orientation in front of his nephew for whatever reason. Owen knows his uncle is gay and could care less but the uncle's efforts to seem heterosexual are very amusing and saved the movie. Kevin Smith has a cameo, which is standard procedure for their friendship. I like how they always appear in each other's movies. And last but not least is Paris Hilton. I thought she did a very good job and I know I am in the minority, but I think she is a very good actress. I found her dark hair distracting only because the DVD cover shows her with blond hair but yet she is a brunette for the entire movie. Other than that, I enjoyed her performance and thought she had great chemistry with Jason Mewes.

Tim Thomerson had a very small part as Lisa's money hungry dad. Tim Thomerson is one of my favorite "B" actors. Too bad he didn't have a bigger part. The movie actually had lots of bit actors which was a little distracting because I was too busy playing the "what other movie have they been in" game.

Bottom's Up is a really good straight to video movie and I would recommend it to anyone who is a Jason Mewes' fan. I give the movie 4 out of 5 stars.
