What is boudoir photography?
Boudoir photography is about sexy pictures. When a lot of people think of paying someone to take pictures of them in their underwear, they imagine some seedy place with a dirty old man snapping away. And who wants pictures that look like they came straight from the 80's with huge hair and skanky makeup? No, boudoir photographers aim to make you look sensual and classy; like you've just stepped out of a Victoria Secret catalog.
How do you find a boudoir photographer?
Boudoir photography is unregulated and of course asking a photographer how good they are isn't going to help you much. Photographers are notorious for having big egos and I should know, I am one. I can't recall the last time I heard a photographer tell a client, "Hey, I suck!" So finding a boudoir photographer's style to match your own is very important. Look through their portfolio and look well. When you look at the photos, try to look at the technical aspects of them too. Are the images too dark or are highlight areas blown out? Many boudoir photography sites offer a blog where you can see their latest work.
Ask them how long they've been in business and find out if they are a member of any professional organizations such as the PPA (Professional Photographers of America). How long have they been doing intimate sessions? Most of all, call them on the phone or meet with the photographer to make sure you click. You need to feel very comfortable around a boudoir photographer.
When and where should you have a boudoir photography session done?
Boudoir photography sessions can be done at anytime of the year. They make unique gifts for Christmas, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, or just because. I've never met a man that didn't get excited by getting this kind of gift. And it's not just for men either! I had one gentleman come to me who wanted to have pictures done of his wife. She was a bundle of nerves before the shoot. But her hubby bought several expensive, pin-up style lingerie outfits and took the kids out. Once I got there and we began her boudoir photography session, she saw how much fun it was and completely relaxed. She got new clothes out of the deal and one very happy husband.
Should I try boudoir photography if I don't have a model's body?
This is probably the first question I get asked when someone inquires about boudoir photography. And my answer is always the same. So? The fact is, you don't have to be a size 2 to look great. A good, professional boudoir photographer will know how to make sure you look your best. They will give you suggestions on what to wear. For example, if you are on the heavier side, go for sexy corsets that pull you in. Your boudoir photographer should understand lighting and posing as well. I can't stress how important this is. An experienced boudoir photographer will understand how to pose and light you correctly for your body type. They should also offer retouching.
Boudoir photography should be about celebrating you. Don't go into your boudoir photography session complaining about your double chins, cheesy butts, charging rhinoceros thighs, sagging udders, stretch marks, etc. Those stretch-marks are part of your journey it took to get here. Just like Carson Kressly says--- "0 is not a size--it's a warning"! You are beautiful.
Who should I bring to the boudoir photography session?
The answer to this really depends on you and your boudoir photographer. You can have the session done by yourself or you can have romantic pictures done together. Some photographers will not do couple sessions so be sure to ask what type of boudoir photography services they provide. Many photographers also offer boudoir photography parties. This is where you gather up several of your girlfriends; drink some wine, order some munchies, and hire a boudoir photographer to come out and take everyone's pictures. Boudoir photography parties are great for bachelorette parties.
How should I prepare for the boudoir photography session?
Talk with your boudoir photographer to know what to expect. Some boudoir photographers offer additional clothing choices and professional makeup. Pick out whatever you think is sexy for your boudoir photography shoot. You could wear jeans and a bra, garter belts, a sultry red Jessica Rabbit dress, or some of your hubby's sports jerseys.
Consider going with a boudoir photography theme by putting your adult Halloween costumes to use. Dress up as a catholic school girl, 50's pin-up girl, naughty nurse, or the classic angel, or devil. Bring props such as feather boas, silky opera gloves, or any item of your man's that you want to incorporate into your boudoir photography session. You can always go naked by covering your parts with your hands strategically placed.
If possible, have your makeup and hair professionally done because it makes a huge difference. High heels, high heels, high heels- these are a must, even if you don't normally wear them. And the higher they are the better. There is nothing like a nice pair of stilettos to make your legs look long and beautiful. Keep lip gloss on hand because dry lips are hard to retouch. Did I mention high heels?
Lastly, don't forget to pamper yourself. Take a bubble bath to relax. Put on some lotion and wear a robe or loose fitting clothing to your boudoir photography session. You don't want those red marks showing up.
So how much is a boudoir photography session going to cost me?
It's not cheap. And quite frankly, boudoir photography is not the area you want to price shop. You will definitely get what you pay for. A custome boudoir photographer can not make a living by charging the same as what your typical portrait chain stores charge. If a boudoir photographer is willing to take your pictures for cheap, it's likely because they are just starting out in the business. And for boudoir photography, you really don't want a novice.
The actual cost of boudoir photography will depend on what you plan to buy and what the market is like in your area. You can expect to pay anywhere from several hundred to several thousand. I find $700-$1,500 to be a good average. If you want to understand exactly where your money goes, read my article on How to Choose a Photographer.
Another thing to consider with boudoir photography, is what you intend to buy. There are many different options for you to choose from. The most popular boudoir photography gift is an album or coffee table book. It's like your own private, naughty magazine for your man. Other great boudoir photography gifts include playing cards and photo boxes which will store your mounted risqué photos inside. Then when you want to display them on a shelf with an easel.
Boudoir photography sessions are fun, exciting, and make you feel good about yourself. If the only thing holding you back is nerves, then do it! You won't regret it. They are great for both men and women. If you have been trying to find the perfect anniversary gift or add on to your wedding shoot, look into boudoir photography.
