My favorite thing to do in my neighborhood is head to Boulders Sport Climbing Center to enjoy some indoor rock climbing with my family and friends. I can bring my kids along, too, even my youngest. Their policy is "If you can walk, you can climb," and climbers of all ages and experience levels are welcome.
You can walk in right off the street with no former experience in climbing and they will help you. They will teach you everything you need to know and the equipment is provided as well. Just wear some comfortable safe clothing and those will long hair need to be sure to tie it back so it doesn't get caught in the ropes.
Their air conditioned facility is a great way to enjoy physical activity out of the Texas heat. They have 40-foot rock climbing walls and 30 top rope stations, a free-standing boulder and an amazing lead. They move the routes around regularly so when you go, you get a different experience and they plan routes accordingly for age and experience levels.
Free Clinics
On weeknights at 7 p.m., they have clinics with topics such as Gear Selection, Intro to Climbing, Routes, Knots, Rappelling, and Slacklining. There is no additional charge for the clinics so if you have a day pass or are a member, you can come to any of these weekday clinics.
Parents' Night Out
Another fantastic feature at Boulders is the Parent's Night Out on Saturdays from 6-10. I take my oldest two every Saturday night. The staff is friendly, they feed them dinner and I know my kids are safe while they are having tons of fun.
Camps and Lock-Ins
In addition to regular climbing fun 7 days a week, there are also camps and lock-ins for people of all ages. Not all of the programs are for children only and some allow parents to participate with their children so it's a great way to spend time with family.
Children under 8 get a discount and you can also get discounts when you are a member or when you buy certain passes. You can buy a day pass and come and go throughout that day as much as you want so feel free to leave to eat or to pick up a friend and come back.
You don't have to make an appointment at Boulders so you can just walk in any time you are looking to check out climbing. You're never treated badly if you are inexperienced and safety and fun are always top priorities. This is my favorite thing to do in my neighborhood.
