The surface that comes on modern bowling balls tends to absorb a lot of oil. Over time this oil can build up on the ball and can hinder the performance. That's why cleaning your ball regularly is so important.
You should clean the ball after each game to remove any dirt or oil that has gotten on the surface. Pro shops sell cleaners that are specially made for bowling balls - most of which are alcohol based. You should be able to easily clean your ball with a small amount of cleaner on a fresh rag after your games.
Always avoid using acetone or acetone based cleaning products on your ball since it will eat away the surface. Only use approved bowling ball cleaners to ensure that your ball stays in good shape and that it meets bowling requirements.
Even frequent cleanings with a rag and cleaner can leave oil and residue on the ball. Every 5-10 games you should thoroughly wash your ball to remove the build up. To wash your ball, place it in a sink of plain, warm water. This helps the ball to warm slowly and will prevent it from cracking. Once it has had time to warm up, pour boiling water over it to dissolve any oil on the surface. Dry the ball completely with a soft, clean towel.
Bowling balls eventually will need to be resurfaced when used regularly. You should consider taking your ball to a professional for resurfacing after about 60-90 games.
Bowling balls can crack under extreme temperatures. You should never leave your ball in your car on hot or cold days since the temperature inside the car can reach extremes that could damage or crack your ball. Avoid warming a ball up too quickly if it has accidentally gotten quite cold.
These simple tips should help you keep your bowling ball in great condition for years to come and will ensure that it continues to perform the way it should while you are bowling.
