Tucked in at the bottom of Mt. Gibralter, Bowral is one of those towns that has come to typify the Southern Highlands tourist experience, and just a short walk through its streets will reveal the reasons behind the popularity of this town. The solid architecture is reminiscent of rural England, a feeling that is complemented by the numerous grassy parks spread around the town. Many of the buildings are heritage listed, and there is a strong sense of history about Bowral. The street fronts are lined with boutique stores, art galleries and antique dealers which create an upmarket shopping experience you would not expect to find in a small country town! The cuisine in the restaurants and cafes is again evident of the European influence on the region, and makes a unique change to the standard Australian fare one gets accustomed to in tourist regions.
Bowral is the kind of destination that maintains its appeal, no matter what the weather. In the winter time its a cosy and romantic place where couples can warm themselves beside the log fire in an old English-style mansion. Then in the spring the tulips bloom and the flower gardens on the streets erupt into a sea of colour. The gardens here are considered to be amongst the best in the world in terms of design and impact, and anyone with an appreciation for nature, beauty or indeed gardening will not be disappointed. But there are also other attractions that do not depend on the weather. Bowral's favourite son is none other than cricketing legend Donald Bradman, who spent much of his formative years here. The Bradman museum has been set up here in recognition of this fact, and is a must-see for any sporting enthusiasts. It takes a comprehensive look at the early days of cricket, and has a large collection of artefacts relating to the career of Bradman.
Bowral is a great place to base yourself on your holiday to the Southern Highlands, and there are a number of accommodation options for you to choose from. However, to really immerse yourself in what this town represents there is only one place you should stay at, and thats the Berida Manor This historic house was built in 1925 and has been converted into a country retreat with 56 large rooms that will transport you to the charm and nostalgia of yesteryear. There are two tennis courts on site, a heated indoor pool, an 1870's billiard table and all the luxuries such as a sauna, spa and beauty treatment facilities. After filling your day with these luxurious activities head to the cocktail bar for a drink, and then dinner at the a la carte Manor Restaurant.
With so much happening within Berida Manor you could easily fill your holiday inside its grounds, but the attractions of the Southern Highlands are bound to tempt you away. You will be glad of the freedom your hire car gives you as it allows you to traverse the region and fully appreciate its beauty. A driving tour of the towns and villages throughout the highlands is an intriguing way to accustom yourself to the geography of the area, and allows you to enjoy the quaint beauty of places like Mittagong, Hill Top and Colo Vale. There are plenty of natural attractions to visit as well, with one of the most common being the Fitzroy Falls. Located in the Morton National Park next to Fitzroy Village, a sheet of water plunges over an 80 metre high rock face into a pool below. The river then continues winding its way through the Kangaroo Valley.
The Southern Highlands really have something to offer everybody. Whether you're a couple, on your own or a family there will be something here for you whatever time of year you come. With the comfort of the Berida Manor as your base, and a hire car from Discovery with which to tour the region, you are set for your tranquil and relaxing escape. Remember that the Bowral Tulip Time festival takes place between September to October, so time your visit with this if you want to experience Australia's premier flora festival!
