I must confess it, with some regret, I reluctantly turned loose of my self styled pity. In my own pragmatic mind, feeling sorry for my failings seemed easier somehow, then facing them squarely. For each of us builds for ourselves a BOX, one in which fate determines how we shall live and not venture beyond, its imaginary boundaries or walls.
Ah Yes! BOXES seem safer than the outside world, for out there we have vulnerable emotions, challenges and even other people who could reject us. How nice we think, to remain within our own little world, consoling ourselves, nursing our wounds, asking ourselves why me? We blame all our problems on others and it seems to add to our self-pity.
Somehow, quietly, silently, hope has a way of penetrating our deepest depression and gloom. Sooner or later, if only a ray of sunshine comes through our windowpane, life vibrates a little. Then our dormant purgatory, which has become a waterlogged piece of driftwood in our sea of life, begins to slide from its perch in our own hands. We desperately cling to the KNOWN quality in our life as a sort of childhood security that has been our home we hide in. Sooner or later, we realize, the driftwood is sinking and hope our only rescue. Then we let loose and decide to survive. Reaching our goals seems rough and taking a chance scares us but we have to let lose in order to survive. At times, we wish we had stayed where we were safe in our own little BOX but the risk is well worth the try. So we reach toward the sun and grab at its rays!
As we touch them, our life illuminates with a florescent glow that reaches down deep within our very bowels. We feel the warmth of being real and alive again. We tingle with electrical charges from our own vitality and vibrate from the challenge! All the magnetic currants in the universe begin to flow again faster and faster. It is great just to "BE".
It is time then, that we should stop, look and listen. For we need to realize that we are out of our BOX! But when you aren't looking, without even thinking about it, we begin to reconstruct a wall. It starts small as we put up blocks, ever so gradually into a new place again. Building slowly, wall by wall, a new BOX! All we can do ,is take time, so the new box has windows and a door to let us out and to let the light in. Maybe that way, our days become brighter and gloom will not invade our world again. Thus making the only dark descending upon us, the closing of our sleepy eyes and not the closing of our minds.

excellent!!
Great piece, I agree:)
Great piece! Insightful, as always...
I can so identify with this. My father built such a strong, sturdy box for me as a child that it took me most of my life to get out of it. But it was as much my fault as his because I just assumed he was right about me being worthless, ugly, fat, untalented, etc. I placed those same limitations on myself for so long. But no more! I try to stay out of boxes these days.
Well written. Inspirational and full of truth. It is hard to live outside the box, when you don't construct your own, society tries to place you in one. I agree, get out of the box....life is going on outside the box. Great job. Thought provoking.
