Boxing Legends: Manny Pacquiao Would Destroy Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Robert Headley
On Saturday night the boxing world witnessed Manny Pacquiao virtually destroy Ricky Hatton at the MGM Grand knocking him out in the closing seconds of round two. This story gets very interesting because Floyd Mayweather Jr returns to boxing this summer to fight Juan Manuel Marquez a man that Manny Pacquiao has already fought and beaten in his career. If you are a hardcore even casual fan of boxing then everyone knows this potential blockbuster is seemingly in the works.

The fight is very interesting at least in my opinion. In his last two fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. fought Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. The fight against Oscar De La Hoya ended in a split decision and he beat Ricky Hatton by TKO in the 10th round. Manny Pacquiao has also fought Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in his last two fights. He knocked Ricky Hatton out in the 2nd round and beat Oscar De La Hoya up so bad he couldn't continue after the 8th round. If you use recent common opponents then Manny Pacquiao has absolutely destroyed the same guys that took Floyd Mayweather Jr. to 10 and 12 rounds.

With Mayweather's boxing return not until July a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao wouldn't likely happen until later this year if not next year. The date and place doesn't matter this fight needs to happen for boxing fans and for boxing in general. With mixed martial arts growing at a steady pace boxing has seen a decline in average ppv sales. Over the last couple years boxing hasn't had an event in the top 5 in terms of ppv sales without either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Oscar De La Hoya. In 2007 and 2008 the UFC had 7 of the top 10 ppv events.

So who would win in a fight between the two boxing legends? Floyd Mayweather Jr has been taken to a decision in 9 of his last 14 fights. His style combines the use of footwork and speed to counter his opponents attacks and sometimes this can be boring to some fans. Many people think that Manny Pacquiao has the right blend of speed, footwork and punching power to really give Floyd Mayweather Jr a tough fight. Personally I would expect the fight to be very good and possibly go to a decision.

If there was any question as to whether Manny Pacquiao had enough power that notion was put to rest with his knockout of Ricky Hatton the other night. We will get a real good idea of what to expect when Floyd Mayweather Jr takes on Juan Manuel Marquez this summer. If it's a very tough and close fight then there is a good chance that Manny Pacquiao could beat Floyd Mayweather Jr if the two ever meet in the boxing ring. The fight would settle once and for all the debate as to whom is the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Furthermore a great fight would be just another accomplishment for both men regardless of the outcome.

I think Mayweather has to prove that he is the best by fighting Pacquiao not by his mouth but by his ... fists. Try not to avoid Pacquiao by blaming steroids or making conflict with anybody just to avoid a megafight. LET'SGET IT ON BIG GUY dont" be a disgrace to your race otherwise your race might disown you.

For the people who says pacman is no match to floydie then i say convince ur boy to sign the fight contract to settle the issue once and for all. Let them fight inside the ring. Let him use his hands to fight not with his mouth.

Mayweather clearly beat the more better and stronger Oscar than the one Manny beat which was old and drained out! Floyd beat Hatton when he was undefeated and was the same mentally after that fight Hatton said it himself mayweather took his career! So now Manny is a GOD for beating two fighters mayweather beat already how come Manny didnt fight the best 140 which to me was clearly tim bradley but o well manny is a good fighter not quick to call him great yet he has to beat Mayweather for me to call him great

well lets get the facts right. everyone knows del a bum was in his prim when he fought mayweather jr. and ricky hatton is a moving crash dummy no speed alittle power but no stagima is not a good boxer and mayweather jr. just wanted to give fans a fight now seriously would you pay to see one of tysons fights...... I did I didn't see the knockout because I went to the restroom at MGM end to quick......pac man and mayweather jr would be a good fight but hands down mayweather would win hands down.... mayweather is defense first with countering and speed. pac man is just a all a round aggresive boxer really a brawler or slugger. after mayweather find the technique of his opponent his rythm would take direct affect to his opponent to crumble

floyd mayweather has to rank with the best pure boxers of all time, relying on defense and counterpunching, not just running around the ring. pacquiao, however, seems to be in another dimension right now. pacquiao by knockout or stoppage, anywhere from round 1 to 12.

I'm unconvinced. No one is picking Juan Manuel Marquez over Mayweather, and JMM managed to Draw Pacman in the first fight, and beat him in the second (even if he was robbed by the judges).

Fair enough. I just think that Manny P is the man that can beat Floyd Mayweather. I appreciate your opinions on the topic all the same.

Wow. We will have to have a bet on this fight. Manny Pacquiao would destroy Floyd Mayweather? Triangle theories do not work in boxing, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali and George Foreman proved that. Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Marquez in winning arguably 18 or more rounds out of 24 against Pacquiao has shown that he can be outboxed and effectively countered. Even Erik Morales proved that. Mayweather is faster and craftier than any fighter Pacquiao has faced, and will have a size advantage. Of course anything can happen... but...

I think Floyd is the only one who can beat Pacquiao currently. Styles make fights. Floyd's style is completely different than Hatton's style. Hatton comes forward, usually attacking with his chin sticking out. Floyd is more defensive-oriented and is very hard to hit clean.
