Boycott of ABC Network Due to One Life to Live and All My Children Cancellation

The Fans Will Stop at Nothing to Save Their Shows

Angelie MacKenzie
The fans of One Life to Live and All My Children aren't going let their shows die without a fight. Viewers of the two canceled soap operas are boycotting the ABC network. In thinking outside the box, the fans are asking advertisers to join them in boycotting ABC network until the soap operas are revived from cancellation.

Hoover was the first advertiser to yank their ABC ads, which will be effective on April 22nd or sooner if it can be done. This resulted in Hoover's "like" rating on Facebook to jump from around 3,000 to almost 13,000 in only 24 hours. Hoover also setup an e-mail account for fans to send messages regarding the cancellation that will be passed along to their contacts at ABC, which is SaveTheSoaps@Hoover.com

Boycotting to keep a program on the air is certainly a reversal of tactics, as usually networks are boycotted to have shows cancelled. At first thought it seems like a bad idea since the soap operas were cancelled in part due to money issues. In fact, All My Children has been over-budget for a long time. But really, targeting the advertisers is a great method. Advertisers canceling ads due to the soaps' cancellation sends a clear message to ABC that it was the wrong decision to cancel the beloved soaps in the only language that they understand - in dollars and cents!

The save our soaps groups aren't just contacting advertisers, but they're also not watching any show on ABC except for the daytime soap operas. Castle seems to be the only show in dispute because the character of Castle is played by Nathan Fillion (former Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live).

But are the fans efforts making an impact?

Dancing with the Stars is one of ABC's most popular programs. However, the fans of One Life to Live and All My Children boycotting that program caused the ratings to fall 13%.

ABC's overall primetime ratings have dropped this week with FOX moving into first place.

Last week, Entertainment Tonight (ET) reported that soap fans were heavily commenting on their Facebook page about the cancellation. If the postings continue, ET may give the effort more publicity which is ironic since it airs on ABC.

Fans are now targeting even more advertisers to have them pull their advertising from ABC including Hershey's and General Mills. General Mill's: 1-800-446-1898. For more information on who they are targeting see the link to the side for Protest ABC Across America.

ABC has lied, we who work, still show loyalty to our AMC and OLTL, by recording it while we are at work! What's so hard to understand about that! We realize it's fantasy and fiction, it's our little escape from reality. Now those what is called reality shows, show me how sick, twisted and selfish people really are today and that's scary. Well, I can say Good-By to ABC, since they don't care how we feel, then sign me up for the Boycott too!

I have watched All My Children since i was about 4 years old.. i even watched it during high school it was on our lounge tv. I will not watch anything else on ABC if they take AMC off the air i record it now and never miss one. I have plenty of channels to choose from. I will just delete it from my remote memory. Why would anyone cancel a show after 40 years? makes no sense. It will be a sad day for me if they go ahead with the cancellation.

Many people such as I, have watched "AMC" since "Aunt Phoebe", "Mona", etc... were alive! Many people, record the show daily, while they work, so they don't MISS A DAY OF IT!!! Replacing "AMC" with yet ANOTHER "REALITY/TALK/DR/SHOW", I will NOT WATCH, & LOSING "OPRAH", APPEARS it is an even worse tIme TO CANCEL "AMC"!!!!!!!!!!!!! (& an "ABC", primarily, viewer)!!! OVER THE YEARS, "AMC" ACTORS have come & GONE, always to be REPLACED, w/ yet another GREAT "AMC: actor/story line!!! Love Errica & Jack, Opal, & Tad, Brooke, etc...but as they come & go, "ABC" has done a FABULOUS JOB replacing actors & writing a VERY INTERESTING, up to date even BETTER SCRIPT!!! So, to my favorite "ABC/DISNEY" TV station, (as of TODAY), please RECONSIDER CANCELLATION OF THE GREAT "SOAP", "ALL MY CHILDREN"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Young & old, ad

If I have to see another reality show, I am going to puke!!! I enjoy fantasy on tv. It is so hard to find good fantasy and they go and pull this stunt. I watch tv less and less. It is a shame that the powers that be at ABC are so out of touch with their audience. It seems they want to provide the cheapest entertainment and cater to a select crowd. Hello DVD player!!! Why did All My Children move anyway if they were going to cancel it all along. Zack could still be alive!!!

Without the soaps what is the point of watching ABC? I am not home during the day but never is there a day when I don't record the shows!

For a show to last for 40 years is incredible! I've watched it since the day it began. To cancel it shows how out of touch the ABC Execs are with their viewers. The shows they put on now come and go and you don't even remember their names. Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, and Desperate Housewives will be remembered. Problem is you have to wait a week and then get reruns. Daytime Soaps keep you engaged. We've all grown up with them. I DON'T WANT CHANGE!!!!!!! WHERE ARE THE GOOD OL DAYS??? I don't want reality shows. We all live in reality, we want fantasy! I hate health shows. Everywhere you turn something else is coming at you that is going to kill you. Let it! Who wants to live in fear all the time. No more cooking, exercise, modeling, tiaras, hoarders, bounty hunters, bully beatdowns, biggest losers, or people begging for dates! TV used to be great! It's getting more sickening everyday! I watch less and less. Bye ABC!
