The new pooch in the White House is from a Texas community north of Dallas called Boyd. As the home town of the nation's new First Dog, Boyd has gained public recognition. Travelers passing through the little town are greeted with a 'Welcome to Boyd' sign on the side of the road. Population is not disclosed on the sign but approximately 1500 residents call this rural place home.

Bo Obama, AKC registered Portuguese Water Dog and newest addition to the presidential family, had humble beginnings in this quiet little town on the peaceful, 10 acre ranchette called Amigo's Portuguese Water Dog Kennels.

Owners, Art and Martha Stern, named their kennels after Ch. Misty Meadow Amigo Brigao who was born in 1987. According to the couple, Amigo was the most wonderful dog to have walked the earth. Over the years they have bred many puppies of which they are quite proud.

Their latest brags, Roxie and Jazz, are pictured on their website with a string of title acronyms after their names and a wall of ribbons clipped to the exercise pen. Other champion dogs depicted in show cuts similar to the Poodle Continental cut are displayed on the site. Bo Obama's mother was a pretty Portie called Penny who was bred to a Pennsylvania dog called Watson. The presidential pup was one of a litter of ten born last October. Senator Ted Kennedy chose one of these puppies for himself and later got Bo as a gift for the Obama girls.

Other Attractions in Boyd Texas

For an agricultural town with only one doctor, the dining industry seems to be flourishing. Travelers often stop in and order up a plate of food at Smitty's BBQ or Southern Delight Southern Style Chicken or they may opt for Aubrey's Pizza or Gogo Gumbo.

Another interest in the area is the International Exotic Animal Sanctuary founded in 1988. IEAS provides a permanent home for exotic animals that have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. Many have been victims of the pet trade and find themselves homeless after they grow up into a large animal with wild instincts. IEAS attempts to educate the public on the plight of these beautiful creatures and holds regularly scheduled two hour, guided tours on weekends as well as weekday tours by appointment.
