Boyz II Men's Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA Album Review
Are Boyz II Men Back to Their Legendary Form?
All This Love is a cover of the DeBarge classic. This rendition is definitely very solid vocally and production wise. Shawn Stockman has the perfect vocal range to cover this song. His velvety voice effortless flows over the mellow track.
On their cover of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's classic Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, they are joined by the legendary Patti LaBelle. The song is very solid but just does not compare to the original which is one of the better songs ever.
On Easy, Boyz II Men remake the classic Lionel Richie and The Commodores track. The song is a solid track but not one of the strongest tracks on the album.
Their cover of Edwin Starr's War is definitely their biggest stretch on the album. The song predominately features Wanya's vocal. His voice is the closest to Edwin Starr's. The song is solid but just a little awkward considering this is a very hard song to cover.
The Boyz reconfigure Marvin Gaye's classic Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology). The song takes a more positive and upbeat nature than the original classic. This is a very strong cover of the song.
I Was Made To Love Her is a cover of Stevie Wonder's classic song. The song is definitely one of the stronger tracks on the album. The song has so much soul it is hard to dislike this track.
Got To Be There is a cover of the Michael Jackson's smash hit. The song is very good and features very strong vocal harmonies.
There'll Never Be is a cover of the classic Switch song. The song once again fits Shawn Stockman like a glove vocally. The song is solid.
One of the better tracks on the album is the Boyz II Men cover of their classic song End Of The Road featuring their friend and frequent collaborator Brian McKnight. The song is an acapella cover of their classic with all the harmonies just as strong as they were the first time you heard the song.
Another great acapella cover is the group's cover of Stevie Wonder's Ribbon In The Sky. The group has always been one of the strongest vocal groups out in contemporary music but their harmonies are just as strong today as they were in the past. Make sure you listen to Wanya singing the bridge during the song you; will remember all the magic of Boyz II Men.
Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA is a very good album. Boyz II Men is still a vocal powerhouse to be reckoned with. The Boyz now clearly Men are appealing to their new core audience on this new album which skews older. It is not easy to give ratings on a cover album because the songs are all so solid; but Boyz II Men's Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA gets 8 out of 10. If you are a fan of Boyz II Men make sure you pick up their new album Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA when it is available in stores on November 13th.

Post a CommentGood job! but take 6 is better.
They r the best group ever.
Excellent review. I can not imagine them doing "War" and disappointed in their choices of Stevie songs to cover. Motown had so many silky, smooth, tear jerking kind of music that the Boyz do so well and "I Was Made To Love Her" is kind of a scream-y song like War. (and I am already swaying in my chair hearing Stevie sing it in my head) I will look for it online; it is the kind of music I would by even without hearing it first.
I loved them back when they first came out. It's nice to see they are releasing something new.
