From the beginning BP gave out misleading and false information in an effort to cover up one of the most catastrophic man-made disasters in modern history.
Initial reports by BP after the leak was discovered, estimated that 1,000 to 4,000 barrels of crude oil was leaking from the underwater oil rig per day.
Those figures were modified shortly afterward to 4,000 to 19,000 barrels of oil.
Most recent estimates by scientists have the rig spewing close to 40,000 barrels of crude oil in the Gulf of Mexico each day.
If the latest estimates are accurate, it would mean the most recent figures are 10 to 40 times more than what was initially reported.
And if these estimates are to be believed it would mean that more than 2 million barrels of crude oil has leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.
It is no wonder that BP would not want to disclose exactly how much oil is leaking into the gulf considering the multiple environmental and federal violations that they engaged in prior to the explosion of the oil rig.
It was reported by a former Alaskan oil engineer on CNN several weeks ago, that BP routinely shortened or altogether avoided testing the blow out valve that was to cap off the oil in the event of an oil leak.
Not only did BP give false information about how much oil was leaking into the gulf but initially did not acknowledge that there was an oil leak.
Literally minutes after the first blast, BP began their efforts to cover their tracks concerning this incident.
In the initial days after the accident, some residents and business owners who made their living from the gulf were given payments by BP to compensate them for their loss of revenue.
In exchange for those payments many reported that they were asked by BP to not talk to the media. Some were even made to sign disclosure agreements that prohibited them from talking to anyone about the accident.
It is clear from these reports that BP was in full damage control and cover up mode literally hours after the accident.
British Petroleum Company does not want America to know what happened on the Deep Water Horizon but they will have no choice but to tell us.
When the situation in the gulf is finally under control and all the dust has settled, there will be federal investigations to find out what, if any, laws or regulations were violated by BP leading up to and after the accident.
Without question, there will be federal indictments and trials as a result of the horrendous industrial and environmental blunder perpetrated by BP.
BP can attempt to hide the truth but I'm afraid the cat is out of the bag.
British Petroleum will undoubtedly try to run from full responsibility for this disaster but they won't be able to run far.
There is no one to blame for this disaster but BP. Their rush to get the Deep Water Horizon on line and operational led to the worst oil leak in American history, imperiled the ecological integrity of the gulf coast and put countless Americans' health in the region in jeopardy.
The fallout from this disaster will last for generations.
It is time for BP to come clean and tell America the truth.
We will accept nothing less.
