BP Oil Spill Disaster Another Obama Erectile Dysfunction

Worst Environmental Disaster Latest Signal of Broken American Governance

Michael K. Miller
Clearwater Beach Florida was clear of BP oil Sunday afternoon. Gulf water warm and clear, inviting. Weather hot and sunny, reassuring. No dark clouds of environmental disaster visible on the horizon, threatening.

Scorching orange, near-record temperatures in the mid-90's french kissed hot green surf rolling up onto sweet-burning sand. Naked, tanned bodies showcased in string bikinis gleamed. Portly, pale uplanders slathered with sun block hid under hats and umbrellas. New Jersey curly-haired muscle and Miami bling patrols reconned the beach. Kansas teachers and Pittsburgh insurance agents broiled tan lines.

Local English, tourist European, investor Asian, and pervasive Hispania swirled - flowing and ebbing in buzzes, murmurs, whispers, and glances. Gull calling, surf swishing, and wee and far I-tuning laid down a soft white noise for anticipation, smiles, and yeses.

Fated itineraries of vacations and getaways, birthdays and conventions, staycations and local breakaways merged and blended into one another. Families reunioned. Couples hope-sexed. Children splashed, Sand castles and castles in the bright burning blue sky were going up. Now-only promises and life-long memories were being made.

No BP oil, no BP sludge, no BP tar balls from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. No oil-covered pelicans, no oil-suffocated turtles or fish. No environmental disaster. No death. Just Florida living and life: loving the American moment of Tampa Bay Metro sun and Clearwater Beach Gulf ocean.

...

The Gulf of Mexico doesn't provide my livelihood. I don't make my living from the Gulf Coast. My family doesn't have a multi-generational history with the Gulf coast. I don't catch, buy, or sell fish for a living. I don't house, feed, sell to, or entertain tourists (well, maybe if very rare, green-eyed).

But my adopted way of life along the west coast of Florida, on the Gulf Coast, is threatened. My Florida friends and associates, my extended family and community of Florida's future are at risk. The risk to Florida, to America, is larger than the BP Oil Spill Disaster.

The immediate FOX and CNN news worthy threat is the BP Oil Spill disaster. This worst environmental disaster is only the latest signal of broken American governance. End Times disaster after disaster have preceded the BP Deepwater Horizon national catastrophe and American tragedy: the banking fiasco, the housing collapse, the American auto industry dissolution, the Iranian nuclearization, the Korean crisis. This is only a short list; the
list of continuing, emerging, and coming disasters is long and growing.

Flaccid leadership in hard times is more than a relative disappointment. Failure to lead is a signal of broken American governance. Failure of Presidential leadership is an absolute threat to American national security.

Love the opening beach scene vignette. Love your expression of flaccid leadership in this country. I love your point of view, AND you are RIGHT!

Fantastic piece Michael!! Love the very catching title.

We are all affected no matter where we live since we all use oil products - plastics, gasoline, gas heating and many more. When Ike came ashore in Houston, oil tankers could not come into port of Houston for days with a very large loss of tax money for the federal government to the tune of millions of $$$$ every single day. Great article.

Amazing work on this, and Happy Fourth to you as well, stay cool!

Great title, great article. I wish people would stop blaming Bush and the oil men. The environmentalists have placed so many restrictions on where drilling can be done - THIS is why we've been dependent on foreign oil - and the environmentalists are dictating how we can clean up spills, too! But you won't hear that on the news. Besides, this happened now. Bush hasn't been there since 2008. Was he on the grassy knoll in 1963 too?

The problem goes way back to the "Drill Baby Drill" Republicans who make their fortune in oil...No new environmental or safety regulations passed or enforced. Obama better get busy...Hot stuff and title, Michael

I don't believe it is the President's fault that this happened and do feel that those at BP didn't follow due diligence. At this point, I just hope that something will work to stop all that oil spilling into the water, hurting the fish and threatening people's livelihoods. I watched the head of BP the other day and the guy looked looked about as guilty as they come.

So sad. You're right on target with this article, Michael. Nice to see you back on A.C. :-)
