In his Book of Lies, Meltzer combines his love of Superman comics with a previously rejected book idea about the story of Cain and Able. The biblical and fictional heroes are tied together through a missing weapon.
Brad Meltzer, a die hard Superman fan, discovered Jerry Siegel's niece at a book signing in Sarasota, Florida who revealed to him a secret that has been kept from Superman fans for decades: Mitchell Siegel, Jerry Siegel's father was murdered in a robbery when Superman's creator was just 17 years old. Meltzer was amazed that Siegel never mentioned the murder in decades of interviews.
And so the Book of Lies was born. Meltzer attempts to solve two mysteries. As it turns out, the police never found the weapon that killed Siegel's father, and the Bible never mentions the weapon Cain used to slay Able.
What makes Meltzer's novel so interesting is the combination of fiction and non-fiction in the same novel. While writing the Book of Lies, Brad Meltzer extensively researched Mitchell Siegel's murder. He re-investigated the case (which turned up a letter to the editor signed by A.L. Luther creepily close to the name of Superman's nemesis), and even visited the Siegel's old home.
But perhaps the coolest thing about Meltzer's new novel, which came out in September, is the fact that it comes with an accompanying soundtrack! Meltzer included an audio soundtrack (which is available on the internet) to help people connect more with the emotion of the work.
Brad Meltzer's novel is full of surprises and well researched story lines that make this book a joy to read for the fan of fiction, mystery and comic books alike. His unique ability to blend non-fiction and fiction make him one of the bright new writers on the literary scene today.
