Seven years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward Brad Pitt is still working to make a difference.
Pitt not only has a big name. He has a big heart.
Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than 4,000 homes in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward. Two years later, in 2007, Pitt toured the city and was shocked by the number of homes that were still vacant, devastated, and destroyed.
Not content to leave the area without making some commitment to help ameliorate the hardship and frustrations for the families of the Lower 9th Ward. Pitt founded Make it Right, committing to building 150 affordable, sustainable, green storm resistant homes for the working families who live in the Lower 9th Ward.
The residents of the Lower 9th Ward were among the last to be rescued during the aftermath of the hurricane and are among the last returning home. Their losses were tremendous and heart rending, but with the help of Make it Right they are proving to be a people of resilience.
Houses are being rebuilt with green technology and architecture. High efficiency appliances and green energy help the homeowners keep the costs down.
One of the great things about Make it Right is the commitment of those involved with the program. It's four years later and the organization is still working to help families come home to the Lower 9th Ward, to safe, affordable housing.
The needs of the Lower 9th Ward have been so great that they have forced innovation in sustainable, green living. They have lowered construction costs and improved design and function of green housing. The project in New Orleans could serve as a prototype on how to make green living functional and affordable.
Hats off to Brad Pitt for founding and backing an organization that continues to help bring stability to New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward.
