Braid is best known for being an Xbox Live Arcade game, however. The downloadable title is heavily influenced by the Super Mario Bros. 2D platforming games. Aside from running and jumping, Braid also features time elements like the ability to rewind your actions. Through this element, players will need to solve several creative and mind-bending puzzles throughout the levels.
Braid was also noted for its presentation. The downloadable game is about Tim and his search for a princess. Throughout the game, you will come across several vague details between the two characters. This story also reflects the gameplay in the levels in unique ways. To further enhance the plot, Braid has beautiful art direction that beats out most retail video games.
Braid became a critical and financial success on the Xbox Live Arcade of the Xbox 360. It won numerous awards as the best downloadable of 2008. However, the game wasn't cheap to develop. Johnathan Blow, the lone man behind Braid, spent three long years building the game. Furthermore, he had to use money from his own pockets to finance the project. This includes paying for the services of artist, David Hellman, in addition to acquiring licensed music.
Because he had to spend $200,000 to develop the game, Johnathan Blow had to charge 1200 Microsoft Points ($14.99) for it on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which wasn't a popular decision at that time. However, the price tag was needed to recoup the costs. Furthermore, Braid was ported to the PC and Mac later to add another revenue stream to the project.
It is now heading to the Playstation 3 sometime in the near future. It makes sense for Johnathan Blow to port the game onto the Playstation Network of the Playstation 3 since it has about 25 million users. Not to mention that he wouldn't need to advertise the game since it is already well-known and critically-acclaimed. Finally, the 2D platforming of Braid fits the Dual Shock 3 controller of the Playstation 3 well thanks to the placement of the directional pad.
It is unknown when Braid will arrive on the Playstation Network of the Playstation 3. Still, many gamers on the system are excited for a chance to play the one of the better downloadable games.
