You can help preserve your brain's ability to function properly by eating certain brain foods. Some foods can actually offer protection to the blood vessels and nerve cells. This is very important since these components of the brain are delicate and can weaken as a person ages. Brain foods that are good for the brain are also good for the heart because both need an adequate supply of oxygen in order to function properly.

Blueberries are good for the brain. They are loaded with antioxidants, which stop free radicals that can lead to mental decline. Researchers tested the effects of blueberries on the brains of mice. They found this fruit can improve motor skills and memory. Blueberries also age related declines in coordination and balance.

Dark leafy green vegetables also help keep the mind sharp. That's because they contain vitamin B, which breaks down homocysteines. Homocysteines are natural chemicals that the body produces. High levels of this chemical is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease. These type of brain foods are very important.

Certain fish offer protection to the brain. The omega-3 fatty acid in fish helps the brain produce more serotonin, a chemical that causes a person to feel pleasure. Researchers at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging discovered that eating fish once a week can dramatically reduce a person's chances of developing Alzheimer's. Their research also revealed that consuming fish helps the nerve cells communicate with each other. This strengthens memory and learning abilities. Fish that have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids include tuna, canned sardines, salmon, and mackerel.

Other type of brain foods are rice and more importantly, brown rice. It contains magnesium and other vitamins that support the cognitive functioning of the brain. Whole grains are also beneficial because they are rich in vitamin B.

Researchers found that hot cocoa has a positive effect on the brain. According to a study at the Cornell University, cocoa contains high levels of antioxidants. In fact, 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder contains much more potent levels than green tea or red wine. Antioxidants protect the brain cells from cognitive decline. Therefore, cocoa offers much more protection against Alzheimer's than green tea or a glass of red wine.

Snacking on nuts is also good for the brain. They are loaded with antioxidants, and they contain omega-3 fatty acids. To get the brain boosting benefits of nuts, eat almonds and walnuts. These particular nuts are especially beneficial to the brain. Another benefit of eating brain foods that are good for the brain is that they are also good for the heart. So, take care of your brain and get plenty of these important foods.
