Branding Your Small or Home-Based Business

Cari Dunn
Many people think of branding as a businesses logo and visual appeal. However, a logo is just a small part of branding. A brand is the business's personality and what the company stands for and how they do business. If you don't define your business, your competitors just might and it won't be a good image. Before you design your logo or even start your business you should decide on a few key things you want your business to be known for. When customers need or want this type of product or service they should think of your business.

Some things to focus on are what sets your company apart from others. If you are eco friendly tell your customers how you do this. Do you donate or give to the community? Again, tell your customers. Tell them how and why you are what you are and why you do things you do. For example, you want your customers to know that not only is one product eco friendly, but so are all of your products and every possible part of your business is as well.

Many people think their logo is their branding, but in fact the logo is just a small part of branding. It gives a visual image for your customers to associate with your brand. Your logo should reflect your brand visually. If your business is trendy and modern, you should have a trendy and mod logo. If your business is about eco friendly back-to-basics products you might want to think about a green, simple, and clean logo. Your logo is not all that your business is. Many large companies have famous logos but the logos are famous because the brand is popular. The logo would not be popular without the brand.

Your brand should only reflect one or two things you are good at. You can't be the best at everything so your brand should focus on what you do best. If you only have about half vegan products your brand can't reflect that you are vegan friendly. You want to be well known for one item or a part of your business that you do well. It can be a product, excellent customer service, contribution to the community, or anything else. What is important that you are passionate about it and your customers know that you are.
