What's happening in there? Your uterine muscles tighten irregularly from about the fourth week of pregnancy on. These contractions are called Braxton Hicks contractions. They differ from the contractions of labor in that they don't get stronger as time progresses and they don't result in your baby's birth. Braxton Hicks contractions are merely your body's way of practicing for the real thing!
What should you do when you have them?
Basically nothing! Go on about your day as you normally would. Enjoy a tall glass of water! Many Braxton Hicks contractions are brought on when mommy-to-be becomes slightly dehydrated. Walking may help the contractions disappear all together. If you find that you are uncomfortable, make a conscious effort to relax from head to toe. Understand and work with your body as it prepares in this normal way for labor and delivery. If contractions are severe or persistent, or if they seem to be getting stronger, consult with your doctor.
