Brazil Encourages Weird Ways to Save Water

Nneka
We have all heard or seen the ads. Water is scarce. California is in water shortage and is already in a rationing stage. I mean, we have been told when to water our lawns and what amount of water to use each month if we don't want our water bill to double. This is a real issue that needs serious intervention. How can we really save water?

Ask a Brazilian environmental group. An ad is running all over the country and is on youtube encouraging its citizens to save water by peeing in the shower. Gross you say? Well, not if you already always do it!

Peeing in the shower Brazilian way means if you are in the shower and you feel like you have to pee, and then just handle your business in the shower. Rather than coming out of the shower to use the toilet bowl and flushing it, it is recommending that you help yourself in the shower so that those gallons of water that would have been wasted while you flushed would be saved, 1157 gallons a year to be exact.

People might find this disturbing because although urine is a sterile and harmless substance, it can be an avenue through which one can pass serious diseases like hepatitis to others.

Have we finally run out of ways to conserve water? Not really. As your local government and water agencies might have hinted, please be water wise. Help keep clean water around for long by turning off your faucet when you are not using water to bush, bath, or wash. Fix leaky faucets and pipes as soon as you can. If possible, turn your plush green lawn into beautiful, well paved land with desert native plants so that you can really save money on water. It may cost much money up front, but you will be reaping heavy rewards in savings in your monthly bills. Most importantly, you will be keeping clean water in our homes. "Be water Wise!"
