Brazil, a Playground for the Sports Enthusiast

Karen Reams
With it's aggressive push to play host to both the World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics of 2016 Brazil has made its enthusiasm and passion for sport well known. Brazil is a country of geographic diversity, biodiversity and wilderness that has led to many sports activities and thrill sport activities to thrive. Whatever your sporting preference Brazil will certainly hold something for you.

The hang gliding enthusiasts should check out Rio de Janeiro with its fantastic views of shorelines, beaches and mountains. Hang gliding here starts at Pedra Bonita in the Floresta de Tijuca National Park and the landing takes place on Pepino Beach. An amazing experience.

Further up in the state of Ceara is the town of Sobral, which is one of the best locations in Latin America for hang gliding. In fact Sobral plays host to a number of national and international paragliding championships.

For those who want 'real' adventure then hop on to an inflated boat in Iguassu National Park and sail right up to the base of the Iguacu Falls at Devil's Throat. You can then raft on the rapids of the Iguassu River and go trekking on trails that go through the Atlantic Rain Forest.

There is a little town in Brazil that calls itself the 'Brazilian Capital for Adventure Sports'. In truth the town is called Brotas and is located in the state of Sao Paulo. It is in Brotas that you will find the thrill of rapid rafting, extreme trekking, Zip-wiring, rappelling and canyoneering.

The sport of Golf is also highly catered for in Brazil and globetrotting golf enthusiasts can play a round or two on an enormous variety of the most beautiful and challenging courses that you will find anywhere.

Golf Digest ranked the 18-hole Comandatuba Ocean Course on Comandatuba Island the best in Brazil.

Plus, many resorts and hotels across Brazil offer onsite golf courses for their golf playing guests.

Tennis enthusiasts can play their game in some of the most beautiful environments in the world. Whether they are in a top end hotel with well lit tennis courts in Bahia or in Costa do Sauipe, which is home to the Brazil open. It is at the Costa do Sauipe Tennis Center that Carlos Montoya and Roger Federer have spent entire training sessions.

If you are talking about Brazil and sport then you cannot leave out soccer. When you are in Brazil whether it is in a jungle village or on the beach it is apparent that Brazilians love the game of soccer.

No matter where you go if there is a green lawn there will be goal posts, a football and at least two teams for the games.

Visitors to Brazil, especially children and young adults, will find lots of opportunities to learn about the art of soccer at classes that are held at the many clubs throughout the country.

An interesting sport that shouldn't be missed is footvolley. This is a combination of volleyball and soccer. Participants are required to use only their heads, feet and chest.

Many United States tour operators to Brazil offer footvolley classes on Ipanema Beach as add-ons to regular tours.

As can be seen Brazil is a sport lovers delight.
