Brazil World Cup Best with 5 World Cup Titles

A Look at Brazil's Championships in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002

Brazil has long been known as a power in men's soccer. Brazil has captured more World Cup Titles than any other country with five. According to ESPN Soccernet Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. They were runner ups in 1950 and 1998. Brazil was the third place team in 1938 and 1978. Brazil finished fourth in 1974. Here is a recap of their five World Cup Championships.

1958

"Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in the Final at the Rasunda Stadium to become the first team to capture the trophy on a different continent." Brazil won their first World Cup defeating host Sweden in the finals. Brazil beat Austria 3-0, tied England 0-0, and defeated the Soviet Union 2-0 in Group Four play. In the quarter-finals Brazil beat Wales 1-0 and defeated France 5-2 in the semi finals. Pele "was champion for the first time as a 17-year-old" scoring 6 of Brazil's 16 goals. Pele's teammate Vava scored five goals fo the champions Brazil.

1962

Brazil was in group three in 1962. Brazil defeated Mexico 2-0, tied Czechoslovakia 0-0, and Brazil beat Spain 2-1 in match play. Brazil defeated England 3-1 in the quarterfinals and beat host Chile 4-2 in the semi-finals. Brazil won a rematch with Czechoslovakia 3-1. Pele "missed much of the 1962 tournament after suffering an injury in Brazil's second game." However Vava and Garrincha both scored four goals a piece to lead Brazil to their second straight World Cup Championship.

1970

This was Pele's fourth and last World Cup. When Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 Pele had secured his place in World Cup fame. Pele "remains the only player to have won three World Cups." Brazil was in group three and cruised to a 4-1 win over Czechoslovakia, then Brazil defeated England 1-0, and Brazil finished group play with a 3-2 win over Romania. In the quarterfinals Brazil beat Peru 4-2. In the semi-finals Brazil defeated Uruguay 3-1 before defeating Italy for the Championship. Jairzinho lead Brazil with 7 goals and Pele had four goals for Brazil in the tournament.

1994

The World Cup came to the United States. Brazil was in group B. Brazil took care of Russia 2-0, then Brazil defeated Cameroon 3-0, Brazil tied Sweden 1-1 to wrap up group play. In the Round of 16 Brazil defeated host USA 1-0 on Independence Day. In the quarter-finals Brazil defeated the Netherlands 3-2. In the semi-finals Brazil won a rematch with Sweden 1-0. Brazil defeated Italy 3-2 on penalty shots to win the World Cup. Romario led Brazil with five goals and Bebeto added 3 for Brazil.

2002

Brazil would win their last World Cup in 2002 in Asia. Brazil was in Group C and defeated Turkey 2-1 in their group play opener. Brazil defeated China next 4-0 and wrapped up group play with a 5-2 win over Costa Rica. In the round of 16, Brazil shut out Belgium 2-0. In the quarter-finals Brazil defeated England 2-1. In the semi-finals Brazil defeated Turkey 1-0. Brazil won the championship game 2-0 over Germany. Ronaldo lead Brazil with 8 goals and Rivaldo had five goals in the tournament as Brazil won their fifth World Cup.
