Breakdancing: Gymnastic of the Streets!

Aaron Chen
Breakdancing, also known as b-boying, breaking, b-girling, is an artform derived from hip-hop and its culture. Rewind to the 70's in South Bronx. African American and Puerto Rican youth have started something big, "breakdancing". Youth are on the street dancing to techno, funk, hip-hop and pop. Their moves were considered "dope" (New fads and culture always came with lingo).

Breakdancing kept a lot of violence off the streets. Instead of fighting, youth battled with the discipline of breakdancing. Battling was a contest of skill, either the audience or a judge would choose the winner of two teams breaking against each other. It was a showcase of skill, the two competitors or teams took turns in doing so. It seemed as though people could pull off impossible stunts in an artistic manner.

After the 70's breakdancing only became bigger. In 1974 breakdancing made it's way onto the small screen, music videos to be exact. Michael Jacksons new video featured breakdancers doing the "robot dance".

The breakdancing craze seemed to die down in the mid 70's as it was being accepted as an ordinary dance style. From then on breakdancing wasnt very popular.
Only recently has the craze come back with major breakdancing contests created during the 2000's. The most famous are BOTY Battle of the Year and Red Bull BC 1. Breakdancing these days are most popular in the US, Europe and South Korea.

The most famous breakdancers are Hong 10 (South Korea), Li Lou (France) and Ronnie (USA). These three were all made famous by Red Bull BC 1.

Breakdancing moves and techniques are all created by breakdancers and new moves are created every day. There is no limit to breakdancing. You just need to impress.

It is not a waste of time to breakdance. It will inprove your fitness, core muscles and creativity. It is very enjoyable, especially if you do it with friends. To start breakdancing you can either be self taught or seek a breakdancing centre. For your nearest breakdancing centre, google "breakdancing centre".

75 PERCENT BY THE WAY.JUST LIKE CORTES DICOVERED THE HENRY HUDSON RIVER HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE MR HENRY HUDSON AND STILL HE GETS CREDIT FOR IT.THE PUERTO RICANS WERE BREAKDANCING WAY BEFORE THE AFRICAN AMERICANS,OR THE MAIN STREAM CAUGHT UP TO IT.JUST LIKE NEW ORLEANS WERE BUILT BY THE SPANISH AND NOT THE FRENCH.THE REAL HISTORY WILL ALWAYS BE CHANGE FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS OR THE IGNORANT.

dont know where you got your history lessons from, but breakdancing did not die out in the 1970s.(it was enormous, just that the main stream caught up 25 years later)it only became bigger, with tv shows like thats incredible 1980) on abc-spotlighting the floor masters-all puerto rican by the way)from 149th street-movies like beatstreet-rocksteady crew -all puerto ricans and the new york city breakers all puerto ricans-except for the black electric boogie guy).movies like the delivery boys, body rock, electric bugaloo 1 and 2,and hundreds of breakdancing movies, usually the hispanics doing the breakdancing or the stunt dancing for the main characters of the movies. highlighting these new crazes at the time to the main stream.when people talk about hip hop, thats not breakdancing originally.that was part of the nuyorican bomba and plena dancing and jibaro dances),along with webo dancing(crouch dancing)that eventually evolved by the puerto rican americans of the bronx at the time which were 75
