'Breaking Dawn' Birth Scene: Already a Twilight Saga Controversy

Breaking Dawn's Birth Scene Faces Challenges of PG-13 Rating and Viewer Expectations

Meg G.
The "Breaking Dawn" birth scene is something that will be very pivotal in the Twilight saga. Those who have read the books know that Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen(Robert Pattinson) have a child in the fourth installment of the print series. Summit Entertainment is breaking down Breaking Dawn into two parts, so there will be five Twilight movies instead of just four.

The birth scene is quite controversial, and would be extremely hard to pull of from a theatric point of view and keep a PG-13 rating. There are a lot of elements present, from the so-called "vampire caesarian" to Jacob's spiritual link to the child that could make for one extremely uncomfortable scene for some.

However, the movie producers and the writer of the book promise to make it so that fans can "feel Bella's pain." As you can imagine, giving birth to a vampire means that the vampire will want to eat your blood. This makes for one extremely gory addition to something that is already messy in real life.

According to MTV, the screenwriter of "Breaking Dawn" said the following of the birth scene ""I want have the experience of the fear and feel her pain. I want to feel everyone's pain on this."

Rosenberg (the screenwriter) also says "Even beyond the physical toughness of the scene, there is also the moment where Jacob (Taylor Lautner) imprints with Bella's newborn child. This "spiritual experience" leads to the child becoming the soulmate to the clearly much older Jacob. "One must be very careful with that," Rosenberg said. "But hopefully you've taken this ride with Jacob in all four movies."

The extremely controversial "birth scene" will continue to burn up the controversy/gossip mills up until the movie containing the birth scene is finally released. We'll even bet you that although this is the most pivotal scene in the movie - one that will make or break its ratings - it won't be shown in the movie trailer. After all, there will likely be many non-Twilight fans who go to see the movie just to see the birth scene and what the fuss is all about.

Personally, I would like to see Breaking Dawn made in a Rated-R version. There's so much in the final installment to the series, that it would only truly be portrayed in a more adult type film. However, the target audience of the film is a bit younger. The screen writer promised "In this series, you don't sacrifice anything. There are some movies that wouldn't play at PG-13, like 'The Hangover,' but this is just not one of them for me. Again, if you're capturing character, emotion and emotional journey, you're OK."

What are your thoughts on the Breaking-Dawn birth scene? Will it be visceral as promised, or do you think it will disappoint, especially given the PG-13 rating target?

I think the so-called seizures people are having is #$%$ I have a VERY long history of seizures (triggered instantly by strobes or flashing lights). I watched the birthing scene and I did NOT fall to the floor convulsing, I didn't black out, scream or do anything else. I am totally amazed by the lengths some people will go to when seeking attention. GET A LIFE!!!

Who cares about PG-13! This should have been an R rating int he first place. It's about vampires not cuddly pale boys. This whole series has been screwed from day 1! This could have been a great film series with lots of artistic talent but 3-17 year old girls got in the way!

I want the movies to be rated 'R'! I don't feel there is absolutely any way they can make the birthing scene and the sex scene well without certain actual scenes! I'm angry that they are trying to keep it PG-13 just because the other movies were...Anyone who has read all of the books, knows how drastic the 4th book turns and if a young child can't read the book, then of course they won't be able to see the movie. Don't be so worried about your sales, instead worry about staying true to the book and pleasing your fans!!!

Cont.)retired teacher/principal of 25 years and have two children and three grandchildren. I took all three of my grandchildren to see Eclipse and it was a great show and in fact they have watched all the movies. I know the Twilight saga very well, in fact, I have read all four Twilight books nine times each (two of the four I have read 10 times), watched the, DVD on 'Twilight' 127 times and watched the DVD on 'New Moon' 107 times, and watched all three movies on the big screen two times each, and I watch the two DVD’s on the first two movies at least two to five times each week, every week, and I have all three soundtracks. As soon as the DVD of Eclipse comes out, I will have it to. I have watched TV for at least fifty five years and the TV has much worse sex, cursing, and love scenes, not only in movies but commercials than the Twilight movies and this is regular TV. So if you think the Twilight movies are a bad for young children then you must think TV is X-rated and should be

Cont.)vampire caesarian so it should all be okay and shouldn’t be a problem.
You said there will likely be many non-Twilight fans that go to see the movie just to see the birth scene, well let them go! If they would read the books and watch all the movies they would see there is nothing wrong with them and in fact, it is nothing compared to the programs on TV. The parents lets their children read the Twilight books so if they think the books are okay then why the concern over the movie. The books have a lot more romantic sexual scenes than the movies do but overall the movies are straight out of the book so if the movies are too bad then the books are to. As for as anyone questioning the Twilight movies and thinking they are too bad, then I would think that their children will not be watching TV! Regular TV and even Cartoons are much more sex orientated and have lots worse language and sex scenes than the Twilight movies do….Get Real! I am 61 years old and I am a retired teac

You commented that those who have read the books know that Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) have a child in the fourth book so what is the big deal. If the children have read the books then everything in them should be okay to put in a movie. Is the books rated ‘R’? …if they are I didn’t know it. I thought they must be PG so what is the problem. You say it would be extremely hard to keep a PG-13 rating. I don’t think this is a problem, because you can fix anything if you really want to. You commented about the so-called "vampire caesarian" and to Jacob's spiritual link to the child and that it could make for one extremely uncomfortable scene for some, well I disagree with that. The children and adults that have read the books have no problem reading it and the books go in detail a lot more than the movie will so why is everyone so concerned. The people already know about Jacob and his link to the child, the imprinting, and about the vamp

It would be nice to see some action between the two characters that are married and have been committed to each other from the moment they laid eyes on one another. However, the book just skims on the sexual part of thier love so they should stick with the book. They also need to not change the storyline, the movie should follow the book not run its own course...

I say that they can make it either pg-13 or rated R it dosen't matter but they must show the birth scene and all of the other sexual interactment between Bella and Edward.
