Breaking and Entering

Adam Von Busch
If I only the laws were different, I could have ended the incident before it got out of hand. There was a child in the bedroom sleeping. Good thing he never came out before he left. It could have traumatized him for life. This is why I say if someone breaks in to your home, you should have the right to take their life. It would also lower the number of break and entering crime's if the suspect knew they were going to get shot.

I am sleeping in my bedroom and hear a loud noise coming from outside our apartment. I ignore it thinking it is someone coming home from work. All of a sudden, I hear it again only if it sounds like it is my door this time. Someone is trying to break in to my house I am thinking. I get up out of bed and put my pants on. I walk over to the front door. I start to look through the peep hole and the door flies open hitting me in the face and breaking my nose. My eyes start to water vigorously. I can't see clearly at all. He stomps in the apartment as if I am not there behind the door. He rushes into the apartment and is looking around. Get out of my house!, I scream. "No!", he says laughing at me. What am I going to do? He starts rummaging through our stuff. This guy is twice my size, but I have to get him out of our house. I get up and wipe off my eyes trying to clear my vision. He walks over and hits me across the face. I fall to the ground again. If only I could shoot him, but he has no weapons I can see. The law states that I can't shoot him unless he is facing me and threatening my life. I will dial 911 and leave the phone on, so they can hear me cry for help. I reach in my pocket reaching for my phone. I start to dial while he is not look at me. I push the send button and hide the phone behind my T.V. ,so he cannot see it. He walks in to the kitchen and opens some drawers. I hope he don't kill me I was thinking. My wife is probably hiding so that she doesn't get hurt either. I just hope he don't go into either of the rooms to find my family. He walks out of the kitchen with a knife and starts to cut up my furniture. The guns are still in the bedroom, so even though he has a weapon I will not be able to get to mine. "Help!", I yell hoping that the cops will hear me on the phone. "Shut your mouth before I slice your throat", he says angrily. I stand up and try to get my arms around his neck, while he is looking away. He falls backwards on top of me and turns around, when I lose my grip. He grabs me by the throat. "You're going to die, mister", he states. I know I am in trouble now. He starts to tightly grasp my neck; I am trying to breathe, but slowly starting to lose consciousness. My face is starting to feel funny. Boom, a noise comes from outside. He lets go and throws the knife. All of a sudden, I realize he is gone. I stay on the ground for a moment, trying to think about what just happened. I sigh in relief that it is all over. I stand up and look around, everything has been gone through. My furniture is destroyed. He got away with it. I walk over to my son's door and open it slowly to peek in. He is still sleeping, thank God. Then I hear sirens coming from outside. I walk over to the door and see them speeding into the parking lot. It's too late, I think to myself. He is already gone. "They jump out of their cars and rush to my door. Is he still here?" the cop says. "No, you are too late he is already gone", I reply with anger. Sorry, sir, He says. "Well, if the laws were different he still would be.", I say. "Why is that?", he asks. "Because I would have shot him", I reply." That is not the answer", He says. "Why?" I say. "You don't want to shoot everyone do you?", he says. "No, you are missing the point, sir", I explain "Now he is going to break in to someone else's house and by the time you catch him, he will have broken in to several others homes." "I see your point, sir he says Are you okay?" "No, I am not okay; he tried to kill me", I exclaim. "Did you get a good look at him?", He says. "Not really it was too dark", I say. "Ok, we will be monitoring the area, until we catch him", He says. "OK", I say to him. The officers get back in their cars and leave the parking lot. My heart is beating so hard thinking I won't be able to go back to bed. I walk back in the apartment and shut the door. I turn on the light next to the door. I see that the door jamb is busted. I walk over to the kitchen and grab a chair to put behind the door. Then, I walk over to our bedroom door and hear some water running. I open the bedroom door and realize it is coming from the bathroom. I walk into the bathroom and find out my wife is in the shower. "You realize what had just happened I say to my wife. No, what happened?", she says. "Someone just broke into our house I explain." "What?!", she says jumping out of the shower. "I almost was killed I say to her." " Is he gone?", she asks. "Yes, he broke the lock and everything I say to her." She wraps a towel around her and walks out to the living room with me. "Everything is destroyed!",, she exclaims. "I just said that" I say. "Let's just go to bed and discuss it in the morning" I say to her. Tears start rolling down her face with a disgusted look on her face. We both walk in to the bedroom and lay down in bed.

The next morning, I wake up thinking about what we are going to do. I get out of bed and head to the closet. I start changing my clothes, waking up my wife by saying "I am going to talk to the police chief today." "Ok, but I am going to take our son and go somewhere safe while you are gone.", She explains. "Sounds good to me I reply." "I go down to my car, start it up, and take off to the police station."

I arrive at the police station, seeing so many cops outside chatting. I wish they would be patrolling this town a lot better, than chatting in front of the station, I am thinking to myself. I walk into the police chief's office angry and defeated. "Hi, sir" I say to him. "Hi, is there something I can do for you?" he asks. "Yeah, I just about got myself killed last night with my own knife" I reply. "Oh, really" he say. "Yes, because the stupid law states that if someone breaks into your house unarmed, you can't shoot them in this state." "I realize that, but I can't change that law", he states. "I know I just have a few questions for you I say." "How many people break into homes and repeatedly and get away with it?" I ask. "I would have to say it has happen a few times" he replies. "I would say it happens more than a few times I say to him." "You are just trying to cool me down." "I don't know the exact figure, but I can say it happens probably more than it should." "If I that law get changed, it wouldn't' happen at all", I explain to the officer "They wouldn't make it out alive. "No it wouldn't because they wouldn't be alive if you could shoot them" He responds. "Exactly, which would mean lower crime too, because more thieves would be afraid of getting shot", I state. "You have a good point, sir", he says "Sorry, this happened to you and hopefully this law will change." "Thank you for your time, sir" I say walking out the door. Maybe law enforcement is on the same page it just needs to be pushed through.
