Breaking the News to a Child with Cystic Fibrosis

M
Cystic fibrosis can be hard on an adult, but for a child with the disease it is far worse. An adult's body is fully developed, while a child's is not. But like every disease, the afflicted person should learn about CF and do what they can.

Telling a person about any disease it is a very difficult process. The emotional roller coaster involved can be overwhelming. The key is to stay strong. That factor is hard when telling a child that he or she has a disease, which is serious and deadly. Now, how do you go about telling your child? It is easy to try to prepare yourself, but reality is you cannot do such a thing. If you are a human, you will be hurt in so many ways, because this is your child. The best thing you can do is sit them down, along with your spouse and their siblings, to tell them about cystic fibrosis. You are going to want to find easy-to-read materials for your child so that he or she can explore what they will be facing on their own. Do all that you can to stay strong and show them everything is going to be okay, regardless of how bad things seem. Let them know that you will be there with them every step of the way.

Upon telling your child, do not treat them any differently from other children. Different treatment will make things more difficult for them. Ask your family doctor for help. In some cases, your child can still do regular activities, but with more caution. You are also going to want to tell them that there are treatments to help them fight the disease. Do all that you can to be positive about the situation. If you are strong, they will be too.

After telling your child, ask if they have any questions. If they do, try to answer as many as you can. If they start crying about the news that they have cystic fibrosis, embrace them. It is difficult to tell a child they have a disease, but do all you can to make it easier for them. Do not lie to them. Just be honest. There is no great way of telling them, but with gentleness the news may be easier to both deliver and hear.
