Breaking News on the Healthcare Debate

Ronnie Manns
Was channel surfing a few minutes ago and ran across a cable news show all excited about the new direction that the healthcare debate is taking. They were speaking about the fact that now there was talk of the public option being replaced by the same option now enjoyed by our representatives in congress as well as all federal employees.

My first thought was, how is this breaking news when this was the very system that President Obama campaigned on? How many times must he fulfill his campaign promises before the media get a clue that this guy really did mean what he said on the campaign trail. What needs to be followed is the number of promises that he made and how many he has fulfilled to date. We need to keep him aware of the promises made and those yet unkept instead of searching for a trip wire that can be used to bound and gag him.

Just as some have forgotten what he said about the war in Afghanistan. Again we forget that this President has said that he would not leave another president the type of mess that was left to him. I thought that I hear him say that he would shut down the war in Iraq, focus on Afghanistan then when it is safe to do so end that one before leaving office.

What will be interesting to hear is those opposed to anything that this president does have to say when the senate comes back with a solution which includes giving the public the same type of coverage that they have. I have to wonder what will be said against giving us the same kind of coverage that they enjoy and if they are against it, will they be willing to give it up. Is it really that rare for a politician to keep his/her campaign promises or are we just that cynical? If this president continues to follow through on his campaign promises and completes much of those things that he promised, what will be his reward? Will it be the reward of a grateful nation or will we then demand more and more? I hope a little bit of both.
