Breaking News! Sony to Discontinue Sales of Rear Project TV's

Lchaim
Sony has reported today that they will discontinue producing and selling rear projection TV's. The three manufacturing plants in Japan, Mexico and Malaysia will stop production. The rear projection market has been declining as LCD's and Plasma screen TV's take up most of the sales. Sony's global sales forecast for rear projection TV's was originally 700,000. That was brought down to a forecast of 400,000. Last year their forecast was 1.1 million units. In comparison Sony expects to sell 10 million LCD's through March of their fiscal year. That's almost 4 million more units than sold last year. Sony will be concentrating on selling LCD's and their other technology called organic light-emitting diode (OLED).

While prices have been nose diving on LCD's and other flat panel technology, Sony lost over half a billion dollars in its partly due to declining sales of rear-projection TVs.

Additionally, Sony is under a lot of pressure to compete with the LCD's as other major manufacturers are forging ties to compete in the global economy. For instance Sharp has announced a partnership with Toshiba and Panasonic's parent company, Matsushita, announced a working partnership with Hitachi and Canon for their LCD business.
