Breaking the Night

C.
In Madrugada, before the blaze
of each new morning's light
in a semi-conscious restless haze
I check to see if I'm still breathing

Breaking the night to start the day
with numbed senses and tired raw eyes
sad from the heart that would not stay
and was never truly mine.

Daylight is only purposeful after sleep
and to a fresh awakening
not from hours of silence deep
when the mind refused to slumber

The veins feel empty, and void of breath
in clinging only to darkened shadows
there is nothing ever I fear worse than death
and that be the only reason

For allowing thoughts of passion and pain
from too many times dismissed
behind hidden tears of icy rain
attempting, but failing, to be wordless

But without knowing this you can walk away
and cause the prophecy true
'be-near-me-lord-jesus, i-ask-you-to-stay-'
the words which haunt me still

For the lies they told, I see you upholding
without acknowledgment of the source
the path from then to now to never-ending
TO LIVE AND DIE WITHOUT HONOR

In Madrugada, before the blaze
of another day's beginning
again I walk in a semi-conscious haze
breaking the night.
