Breaking from Reality

G.H. Monroe
Does anyone remember when it began to become clear by the math, that Hillary Clinton had no path to the Democratic Nomination? With no disrespect to my friends in the Clinton camp, I refer you back to the various interviews with Clinton surrogates who seemed disconnected from everyone else's reality in the most bizarre manner. It reached a point where they would need to win every remaining primary with 80% of the vote and Terry McCauliffe was still popping up on morning shows proclaiming Mrs. Clinton to be the next President. It was almost sad. My point here is not to flog the Clinton campaign in a postmortem fashion, but to offer some perspective on what is happening now.

Even as the McCain campaign is "waving the white flag of surrender" in Michigan, in order to amass its "troops" in Indiana which was supposed to be solid red, they speak of being confident. Even as Florida, Virginia and NC trend towards Obama, they speak of being confident.

As they bury Sarah Palin more deeply away from anyone who might ask her a question that requires something more than a sound bite in reply, they speak of how proud they are of her "victory". Even as the facts tell them that any poll not taken in a "Fox Noise" studio or a John Birch Society meeting, has declared Joe Biden the clear winner, they speak of how Palin "mopped the floor" with the more polished and knowledgeable Senator. Of course, being more knowledgeable than Gov. Palin is not a task of Biblical proportions. When SNL runs a skit mocking you and uses your exact words and gets howls of laughter from the audience, that is the definition of a "laughing stock".

I was reminded of George Costanza, who said, "It's not a lie ... if you believe it!" So I understand, Republicans, what you must do to buoy your spirits. Do what you must, Republicans, to gird your flagging hopes. Just remember, having McCain and Palin show up on Jan 20th doesn't change the results, after the election, you really have to bow to reality!
