Having battled addiction before, I know the road to being smoke-free isn't going to be easy. I am preparing ahead of time, and have designed a plan of attack that will help me to stay on the path to clean, fresh air.
Keeping my New Year's Resolution Step One: I have a support friend. This special friend just happens to be my sponsor in my 12-step program, and just like when I first started in this program, I will call her everyday and let her know how I am doing, and my frustrations. If I need to call her 10 times a day I know it's okay. We've discussed it in length and we are both prepared.
Keeping my New Year's Resolution Step Two: I decided to try a little help from the medical field and got some Nicorette gum. I don't want to take it if I don't need it, but there is a possibility I might need something to take the edge off, and I want to be prepared.
Keeping my New Year's Resolution Step Three: I have lots of fruit on hand, and it's all the fruit I like. Some years ago, I read an article that stated, the natural sweetness and flavor of fresh fruit makes cigarettes taste terrible. Well, I tried it, and it was true; my cigarette tasted awful! Now, if I fall off the "smoke stack" so to speak, at least I won't enjoy it.
Keeping my New Year's Resolution Step Four: I joined a gym. I did this to help my lungs get back into shape, and also have a way of burning off edginess.
Keeping my New Year's Resolution Step Five: This last Christmas I took lots of pictures of my friends and loved ones that mean so much to me. I want to love and enjoy these people for as long as I possibly can. Seeing them will remind me why I want to extend my time with them; not cut it short.
This is my huge New Year's resolution, and the steps that I am going to take so that this time, I can succeed.
