Breakout Artists Hollywood Undead Take the Internet, and the Music Industry by Storm!

Podcast Interview with Da Kurlz, Member of Hollywood Undead

Christina Avina
Music always has, and always will go through shifts in what is considered mainstream or popular at any given moment. It used to be that people only considered music that was played on the radio to fit into that mold, but things have drastically changed in recent years. The internet is largely responsible for this change, in my opinion, and it has played a role in either making or breaking the success of some new bands. It might sound strange to some that the internet could play such a big part in getting a band noticed, but if you have any doubt just ask the members of Hollywood Undead.

In 2005 two of the members of Hollywood Undead posted their song 'The Kids' on the band's Myspace page. In just a little more than two months they had nearly 1 million plays and were on their way to becoming one of Myspace's top unsigned artists by 2006. Some might think they became established so quickly because they fit neatly into the mainstream mold, but anyone who has heard or seen Hollywood Undead would laugh you right out of the room. They are neither mainstream or ordinary, and they definitely aren't what I would consider to be radio friendly. That's the beauty of the internet; it opens things up for music fans to hear something other than "the norm" and gives great new artists like Hollywood Undead an instant fan base.

With countless numbers of new bands trying to get noticed in this business, the members of Hollywood Undead put together a sound and a look that instantly drew people in from a highly targeted audience......the youth of America. Young music fans have always been the driving force behind a band's success or failure, and now more so than ever this becomes true with the majority of music downloading being done by teens the world over. This band has found a formula that works, and it is working for them very well. Hollywood Undead has just broken the surface of their success, and I expect to hear much more from them in 2009.

I spoke with Da Kurlz recently about the band's success story, and what is coming up for them in the months to come. To hear our full audio interview (which includes a dirty joke told to me at the end by Da Kurlz himself), click the following link:
