Break-up Poem: You Walk Away

H. Kris Thomas
Will you say the words I think you will say?
I can feel it coming
And I am backed against the wall
Because you are not giving in
And I am not giving in.

And I thought if my eyes became a little more humble,
If I erased the burning fire behind them that you would
Be gentle with me.
But you still deal with me harshly.

Why do I feel as if I am pushed into the walls of this room?
I am crushed by the heaviness of your words and your mean finger
Pointing and accusing.

And as difficult as I can be
You know that I love you as you are.
Still, I am bruised by you often.
I crawl after you as you leave,
Hands around your ankles,
Swimming in our confusion,
Refusing to let you go.

Just when I thought you'd see things my way
You stoop down,
Your eyes on my eyes,
Your hands over my hands,
And you pry my hands off of you.
You stand erect,
Turn on your heels
And you walk away.
