The breasts are mammary glands that function to produce milk, aside from their biological function; the breasts are a symbol of feminine beauty. Losing a breast to cancer is often devastating. Approximately 30 percent of women in the state of Georgia have breast cancer. This examiner couldn't find the percentage relative to the women living in Atlanta. One might assume that the number of women in Atlanta being treated for breast cancer would proportionate to the number of women living with breast cancer in all the cities that make up Atlanta.
Breast cancer is named according to the part of the breast involved. For instance, if the cancer is in the ducts of the breast, it is called Ductal Carcinoma. Likewise, if the cancer involves the lobules of the breast, it is called Lobular Carcinoma. The third type of cancer involves the connective tissue of the breast. This type is called Sarcoma of the breast. It is quite rare for cancer to start up in the connective tissue of the breast.
There are two different classes of breast cancer; one is noninvasive breast cancer - this is known as in situ breast cancer. Ductal Carcinoma is usually an in situ breast cancer. The other class of breast cancer is invasive breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer is able to spread away from the place of origin. In other words, invasive breast cancer can spread into other parts of the breast and beyond. If you have been diagnosed with stage I to stage IV, you have invasive breast cancer.
Breast cancer can spread from one place to another through the lymphatic system. The lymphatic vessels carry lymph fluid throughout the body, and it can also carry cancer cells that have broken loose to other areas of the body.
Atlanta's women are fortunate to have many cancer clinics in different areas of the city and surrounding areas. Some breast cancer clinics are listed below.
