Breast Cancer Survivor: a Label or Badge of Honor?

Coral Levang
I am a breast cancer survivor.

I fought that "label" for more than two years now because I never felt I was anything more than lucky--my cancer was caught so early that I was able to make the decision over cancer before it made the decision over me.

Several friends have not been so lucky. They were not able to make the choices I did and cancer has taken its toll on all who have had to watch it as it tries to claim its pathetic victory.

But victor it is not, for as long as I have breath, I will stand and face it head on, fighting back for those it has taken from me.

I have whimpered about many aches and pains over the years. I have postponed things I want to accomplish only to have years go by and half-finished projects collecting dust. I have wasted so many precious moments. But no more will I stand by and do nothing.

For, you see, I am the lucky one...because I am still alive.

I am a breast cancer survivor.

"Henceforth, I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing. Strong and content, I travel the open road." (Walt Whitman)
