Breast Milk Ice Cream? Not for This Gal!

Will Consumers Go Crazy for Baby Gaga?

Jennifer Wagner
It's a sad day when I have to turn my nose up at ice cream. After all, it IS one of my favorite food groups! Yet, after hearing the 'buzz' about the London restaurant that is serving human breast milk ice cream, called Baby Gaga, I think I lost my taste for the creamy dessert.

Where does the main ingredient for breast milk ice cream come from? According to parenting websiteParent Dish, lactating women are hired at a wage of £15 (roughly $ 20.00 USD) for every ten ounces of milk extracted by breast pumps. Each 'donor' receives a health screening similar to that used to screen blood donors to ensure consumer safety. To date, there are currently fourteen women contributing their breast milk for the making of Baby Gaga.

Apparently, the London restaurant is serving the specialty-brew with lots of bells and whistles. And with a price tag of £14 for a dish of Baby Gaga, they probably should. The Daily Mail reports that each order of Baby Gaga is served in a martini glass. A costumed Baby Gaga waitress (yes, they look much like Lady Gaga) pours liquid nitrogen into the glass through a syringe, stirs the treat, and adorns the glass with rusk (a biscuit similar to biscotti). The taste is said to be creamy and rich.

You may recall that back in 2008, PETA wanted the US company Ben & Jerry's to stop getting their milk from cows and begin manufacturing human breast milk ice cream. . Thankfully, the idea was not well received by Ben & Jerry's officials. The 2008 Spokesman for the company, Sean Greenwood, stated, "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

Will breast milk ice cream eventually go global? If it was offered in a restaurant near you, would YOU eat it?

I heard about this too about a fortnight ago. The last I heard, breast milk ice cream was taken off the menu.

forget about the merits of the stuff (though I think you are right to be put off), I violently object to paying that much for a lousy little dish of ice cream.

As natural as it may be I don't think this is one that will be desired by the masses. Good for Ben & Jerry's for handling a sticky situation with tact!

This idea is appalling to me! Breast milk is for babies only!

I'm not so sure I'd ever buy it, but can imagine it's easily digested by the lactose intolerant. Personally, I'll just stick with my fruit smoothies for my ice cream replacement.
